The prime minister and chancellor are now self-isolating after contact with Health Secretary Sajid Javid, who has tested positive for coronavirus.
No 10 initially said they would not have to isolate, as they were taking part in a pilot scheme that involves daily testing instead.
But opposition parties said it suggested there was "one rule for them and another for the rest of us".
The PM later said they had "briefly" considered taking part in the scheme.
It comes ahead of the lifting of lockdown rules in England from Monday.
Almost all legal restrictions are to end, including limits on how many people can meet, and nightclubs will reopen, but self-isolation rules will remain. Following news that Mr Javid had tested positive and been in contact with Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak, No 10 said a workplace pilot scheme would allow them to keep working from Downing Street.
But the announcement met with an angry response, with Labour's Jonathan Ashworth saying it was unfair politicians appeared to have access to "VIP testing" to avoid self-isolation, while Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey asked if it was only available to the "privileged few".

Weren't they all vaccinated? Of course the PCR test is total crap, but there is a certain satisfaction in seeing the elites forced to play by their own rules.
I couldn’t believe their original decision, considering what the general public have to endure.
I’ll take my lateral flow test Monday morning before setting off to the office in London. And I intend to NOT wear a mask on the train journey anymore.
Perhaps all 650 MPs will get pinged and have to quarantine? Will we notice?
Boris had the damn virus. He had it worse than Trump. So we can get it if we are vaxxed AND already had it. So let’s all tie plastc bags over our heads and be done with it all. Or go the way they did in On the Beach.

Was he not vaccinated?
Did Sajid not wear a mask all day long?
Did Sajid ignore instructions to social distance and “telecommute” where possible?
Vaccinated people in my workplace have to wear a mask if they meet with people in the office. If they are alone they do not have to wear a mask.
Unvaccinated people have to wear a mask all day long even if they are alone.
Vaccinated people can still spread the virus. They should mask if masks have any value at all.
BoJo has already had the virus and was later also vaccinated for it. If this isn’t enough to end his hysteria, he needs mental help.
Since I am unvaccinated I also have to eat separately from others. It doesn’t matter if they are vaccinated or not. I am gonna kill those vaccinated people by eating lunch with them. LOL.
This is like having a black person eating lunch with a white person in 1950’s Alabama. Blacks are gonna spread their cooties to the white folk by eating lunch with them.
Everything old is new again.
I am thinking we are back in 1960s Vietnam.
CDC is going to have to destroy the village to save it.
