The death toll from devastating floods across parts of western Germany and Belgium rose above 90 on Friday, as the search continued for hundreds of people still unaccounted for.
Authorities in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate said 50 people had died there, including at least nine residents of an assisted living facility for people with disabilities.
In neighboring North Rhine-Westphalia state officials put the death toll at 30, but warned that the figure could rise further. Some 1,300 people were still reported missing, though authorities said efforts to contact them could be hampered by disrupted roads and phone connections.

Is this close to Oberhausen, do you know?
only a five-year-old believes this
In one of the articles it talked about flash floods with a photo showing the mud and water with lots of homes piled up together.
Doesn’t sound like what we often see in populated areas in the USA of folks sandbagging their yards against a rising river. Lots of places in Europe have a bunch of folks living in a narrow valley. Heavy rain and perhaps a berm or dam breaks...
Of course I’ve also never understood the “thousands die in heat wave in Europe” that we sometimes see. The heat a few weeks ago in Seattle (112? over a few days) claimed to have killed about 50 people.
This article from the BBC has a good clip at the top showing a rescue from a roof top. You have to put up with an add but it shows the mud, debris and water.

I knew one of the articles would blame global warming. “Warmer air can hold more water....”
Meanwhile, the drought in western USA is ALSO being blamed on global warming.
Want to see a REAL drought? When trillions of gallons of fresh water is locked up in glaciers a mile tall over Canada.
It’s not global warming that is the problem its racism! Per you example Canadians are selfish racist keeping all that water locked up in glaciers to themselves instead of sending it to Africa where the people there really need it.
I just read somewhere that a “wobble” in the moon’s rotation would cause flooding in the Atlantic basin. All man causes don’t ya know...
I’ve read a couple of ‘news’ reports about the floods, and have yet to find any discussion about what caused this. Record rainfall? Poor planning? Or what? No idea because the writers only talk about the damage caused.
Journalism school just ain’t what it used to be.
The articles that I read talked about record rainfalls.
Of course there could be the added element of human failure.
I was in Liege and Maastricht this week, returning to the R-P last night. I has been raining almost nonstop, and there are several rivers over their banks. Many delays on the autobahn. It continues to rain today, and I expect into the weekend.
No one I’ve spoken with mentions Global Warming at all...I suspect that is spin put in by the political chatterers...
I think it’s due to sunspots. I think AOC is working on a plan to control sunspots.
Naa, that’s Bill Gates. He’s going to spray something in the atmosphere to help block the sun.
I saw a pic of one town that is wrapped inside an ox bow. Yeah, that’s gonna flood. Was there an evacuation ordered? If not, why not?
Journalism school
has been replaced with
Urinal-ism school
Where they are taught thousands of ways to pee on folks legs and report it’s rain.
50 people had died there, including at least nine residents of an assisted living facility for people with disabilities.

The stuff nightmares are made of.
Heartbreaking.
I stubbed my toe this morning, I blame it on global warming.
Yes, it is :-(
But many thanks for the goodness in your heart.
N.B.:As tragical as these flash floods were, such occurrences have happened before - in centuries past.
As it has been pointed out by a fellow Freeper in this thread, many steep valleys in that part of Germany are densely populated (their geology and geomorphology being very conducive to grape cultivation) - and have been since Roman times.
So although I’m not too fast to blame this desaster on the so-called climate change, that is of rather limited comfort to the recently bereaved :-(
