Heathrow Passenger Numbers Remain Almost 90 Percent Down on Pre-Pandemic Levels

Heathrow passenger numbers remain almost 90 percent down on pre-pandemic levels and significantly lower than EU rival airports, new figures show.

Airport bosses revealed just 957,000 passengers passed through its terminals in June compared with 7,246,157 who used the west London airport in June 2019.

The number of passengers travelling through the airport covers the month where Portugal was moved from the green list of countries to amber and led to widespread fury in the travel sector over the speed of rule changes for travellers.Bosses added that the continued closure of the transatlantic links between the UK and United States is costing the country’s economy at least £23 million a day.

Following the latest data, Heathrow bosses urged the government to do more to support the sector.

Their solution is getting more $$ from the taxpayers, not reopening the country.

I’m not flying again until they get rid of the mask nonsense and the other foolishness that makes airline terminals feel like a wing of the gulag. The Europeans are bad, but the US is right up there with them.

I will say this, when I go to Europe, I much prefer taking trains there than planes.

Did they implement the “not required” vaxpass in the UK? Being ‘not required but don’t expect to get anything if you don’t have it’ rule. Will the vaxpass comply with the ‘who’ guidelines? Not that they’ll “require” them but if businesses decide to, well it wasn’t the government that did it. We know how this works. Macaroon in france already said don’t expect to go to dinner or out clubbing without proof. How long before grocery stores, clothing stores, gas stations. Vaxpass for gas? Or soon enough, vaxpass for a battery charge.............

Well heck no. They’re special. Like the private jet to DC from Texas. Do FBOs require CV checks and masks? Who payed for the private jet? Will any of them list it as a campaign or whatever contribution? A bribe?

They can’t figure out why shutting down the country is causing this.

I get the daily aviation numbers. They started to go up but are back down again. I an afraid the aviation industry will not recover for 5+ years at the least, and the face of aviation is going to change starting later this year. Companies that you know today will not be around soon. Even aircraft manufacturing companies are under existential threat.

Agreed, the official blue type masks they make airline passengers wear make it imposdible for me to breathe after 30 minutes. They used to allow bandanas which gave me some ability to breathe while still covering my nose and mouth. I won’t fly commercial until the blue type mask requirement is lifted.

What the world needs is cheap private jet travel—on a large scale.

No security/no masks....make travel fun again...

LOL, I meant when travelling within. Flying within Europe is a pain compared to taking a train, and all things considered even on relatively long routes, you don’t save all that much time. On a train, you get off with your luggage, find a taxi and within minutes you’re at your hotel.

You are closer to the truth than you think.

A few decades ago airlines went to the hub-n-spoke model. Even passengers in Colorado Springs often fly 60 miles to the Denver “hub” to catch flights elsewhere. Dumb model.

Airlines were trying to keep airplanes filled and drive prices down. For instance, Denver doesn’t fly to the Melbourne-Orlando airport, only the Orlando airport. Gotta catch yet another flight to get to Melbourne 60 miles away. Dumb. To do this hub-n-spoke model, airlines bought bigger airplanes.

Embraer and Bombardier understood smaller airplanes with far better economies (40% reduction in operating costs) and city to city flights like Colorado Spring to Orlando-Melbourne is what passenger demand. They got shut out by big business airlines and the Boeing/Airbus cabal.

I think the economy will drive city-to-city models back into play with smaller airplanes that have better operating costs. This means new airlines cropping up as the big airlines are stuck with their 5 year fuel, leasing, and operating plans.
