DALLAS - Outgoing Texas GOP chair and former congressman Allen West insists that former President Trump’s endorsement of Gov. Greg Abbott "doesn’t hurt" his 2022 primary challenge against the two-term Republican governor.
"It has no relevance to me as I prepare to run for governor of Texas," West told Fox News ahead of his speech this weekend at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Dallas, Texas.
Abbott is facing primary challenges from the right from West, former state Sen. Don Huffines, and political commentator Chad Prather. Huffines addresses the crowd of conservative activists and leaders at CPAC on Saturday, with West, a controversial and outspoken former one-term congressman from Florida, speaking Sunday.
The governor, who was invited to speak at CPAC in Dallas, is not attending as he’s staying in the state capital city of Austin, overseeing a special session of the Texas legislature which he requested to complete unfinished business left over from the regular session. An Abbott adviser told Fox News that the governor on Saturday would also be briefing state lawmakers and sheriffs from counties along the southern border with Texas about the state’s ongoing efforts to deal with the crisis at the U.S.-Mexican border.

West is ruining his reputation. IMO
I’m still planning to vote for Huffines.
“An Abbott adviser told Fox News that the governor on Saturday would also be briefing state lawmakers and sheriffs from counties along the southern border with Texas about the state’s ongoing efforts to deal with the crisis at the U.S.-Mexican border.”
Seems to me that Grabbott and crew are more reactive than proactive when it comes to major issues directly affecting the Great s State of Texas.
No charisma, low energy.
I just cannot understand why Colonel West would run against Greg Abbott.
Granted Gov. Abbott is not the most conservative governor I’ve ever seen, but he’ll do until something better comes along.
West is right - Trump isn’t hurting his chances against Abbott, because West has no chance against Abbott.
I figure West was put into the race to split the anti-Abbott folks and ensure Abbott's victory. I may end up voting for Huffines if the numbers show Abbott is a sure bet.
....?? You’ll vote for Huff if you’re sure Abbott wins? Abbott is a RINO and has done NOTHING for Republican issues like HIGH property taxes for years! Gets big RINO donors to fund him and keep the game going and would have killed Constitutional Carry except he would lose reelection.
Vote for a Conservative West who looks and acts like the founders of the TX Republican Party... how many Texans know they were all black citizens. ...ymmv
If I lived in TX, I would vote for West. He’s a true conservative.
While I doubt that West would get in to the race to improve Abbott's chances, I suspect that the result will be that Huffines and West split the conservative vote and Abbott skates in as the Republican candidate...
It certainly doesn't help them.
Agree.
Did you get permission from Michael Berry to use the "Gov. Grabbott" Tag line?
Well now, we here in Texas do have something better that has indeed come along
Didn’t he say he wants to ELIMINATE property taxes? That’s what needs to happen.
The most important question is could he win in the general election? I’m saying right here right now West does not have a chance in the general. If West takes Abbott out Texas will end up with a commie dem governor and it’s game over for the state.
I’ve always had a great opinion of West, but everyone here including those criticizing West’s decision to run are making sense.
West is brilliant. A true patriot. Anyone in Texas who does not vote for Allen West has not heard him speak and does not know his fine history.
In my opinion, Trump is the one making the mistake here.
Abbot is a joke.
Nothing against West personally, just not a fan of a relatively recent arrival jumping into state-level politics. JMO - YMMV…
