Biden fires Trump-appointed head of Social Security Administration
Just the News ^ | July 9, 2021 | Nicholas Sherman

President Joe Biden on Friday fired Social Security Commissioner Andrew Saul, a Trump appointee.

Saul was fired after refusing a request to resign. Saul told The Washington Post Friday that the move to oust him by the Biden administration was not expected. His deputy, David Black, also resigned Friday.

"This was the first I or my deputy knew this was coming," Saul told the Post of the email he received from the White House Personnel Office Friday morning. "It was a bolt of lightning no one expected. And right now it’s left the agency in complete turmoil."

Trump appointed Saul to a term of six years as commissioner. His term would've ended in 2025. He called his ousting a "Friday Night Massacre."

While Saul said his firing was a surprise, he did have a tumultuous relationship with Biden, often clashing over unions. Friday, he challenged the legality of Biden firing him, saying he was "term-protected," and adding that he planned to be back at work Monday morning.

The White House releasing a statement Friday, saying "since taking office, Commissioner Saul has undermined and politicized Social Security disability benefits" and that he had "taken other actions that run contrary to the mission of the agency and the President’s policy agenda."

An interesting test case.

My basic position is that if Trump, or an equivalent, ever gets back into the White House, they should fire about 10,000 people in the first week. The media will yell, "You can't do that!" so maybe it's good to have a lot of precedent that Democrat presidents can always fire anyone at any time for any reason. We need a Republican president to get in and push that precedent more. Be excessive. Burn it down. Shutter the FBI. Decimate the DOJ. Go for it.

And right now it’s left the agency in complete turmoil.

Statements like this are not helpful. Any large organization has so much momentum that it will continue on its course. People need to put on their big boy pants. It should be a clear expectation that when people vote for a politician and he wins that the people's will is done. Quite honestly, the next Republican president should fire thousands on inauguration day. The worst thing that can happen is that a government agency becomes ineffective. If you don't like government, then that is a dream come true.

I seem to recall Clinton did something similar with I believe prosecutors, 96 if my memory serves me right. Not a peep. Then when W fired a few people when he entered office it was the “the most partisan act by a president ever”. While I agree with your statement it won’t make any difference in the eyes of the media. Democrats good, Republicans bad.

And I think it’s important to remember that Trump was impeached (twice) for basically having eggs for breakfast. Democrat Presidents can fire people, and it’s not a peep. A Republican should bravely fire a lot of people. Sure, there will be peeping, but what are they going to do? Impeach him? They’re going to do that anyway. It’s time to govern without any concern for what the other side says, or what their media arm says. That stuff doesn’t matter.

The President can fire anyone in the Executive Branch who he or his predecessor appointed and who the Senate confirmed. For any reason or for no reason.

I think you're thinking of 96 U.S. Attorneys and Trump did the same when he was inaugurated. All U.S. Attorneys in all the federal districts are presidential appointees and are replaced when administrations change.

That's what the Clintons and Obama did.

Not doing that left anti-Trump insurgents back stabbing President Trump every day of his administration.

Not true. Prior to Clinton, most sitting U.S. attorneys stayed in place when a new administration came in. Slick Willie wanted to get his people in there so they could turn a blind eye to Democrat party corruption. Bush 43 left most of the sitting U.S. attorneys in place, but when he fired 5-10 of them on one occasion, the media went ballistic.

Trump should have fired them all, plus many at the highest levels of the Justice Dept, on Jan 21, 2017. He did not, and that may have been the biggest error of his presidency.

This would be a good start. Whether it’s Trump or any other R that gets into the white house in 2024 they should govern completely differently. Going along to get along is a losing proposition.

Actually is started 12 years before. Reagan replaced 89 of 93 U.S. Attorneys in the first two years of his term, 71 of then in his first year. Clinton replaced 80 of 93 in his first year.

So they are not all fired by the incoming president, as you stated in your first post. That's what I thought.

Do you have any idea how many of the U.S. attorneys Trump retained? (I appreciate your providing the LA Times source, but I won't give them a click).

Right-and the ‘’It’s all Trump’s fault’ BS is moot, with all the hand picked Biden goons taking over

The idea that “It’s all Trump’s fault’ is moot anyway!

"Not true. Prior to Clinton, most sitting U.S. attorneys stayed in place when a new administration came in. Slick"

That's more of a half-truth than a a whole truth. What Clinton did that was unusual was fire all the US attorneys in one fell swoop, kind of a 'Red Wedding' for politically appointed members of the Justice Department. I don't believe that had ever happened before, at least not in contemporary presidencies.

But, going back decades, presidents routinely began the process of replacing most of the USAs they inherited. In fact, it was more of a passive exercise than an active exercise; many USAs appointed by previous presidents just left for understandable reasons. However, before Clinton, this took a period of months, or a year or two and not within hours of assuming office as Clinton did.

For instance, Reagan had replaced 89 of 93 USA by the end of his second year in office. Some he fired, but most left on their own accord.

They can’t fire anyone, that hyper-partisan move is unprecedented and unheard of, probably even illegal. At least that’s what we heard when Trump let any of Obama’s people go.
