While the premise of the article is valid, it misses some points.

The Coronado Bay bridge mid-span section is designed to float in the event of a collapse. The navy insisted on this when the bridge was built.

The article also ignores the submarine base at Point Loma when listing forces vulnerable to a channel blockage.

Good luck dealing with the envirowhackos on dredging through the strand. The Marines were forced to stop amphibious landings on their own base at Camp Pendleton, because of a crummy bird.

In an emergency situation I bet they could quickly BLAST a new channel thru Coranado beach to gain access to the sea if the original channel was blocked or say the bridge was taken down.

Then again. I bet the EPA would object to save the sacred Coronado Beach Sand Flea
