In an emergency situation I bet they could quickly BLAST a new channel thru Coranado beach to gain access to the sea if the original channel was blocked or say the bridge was taken down.

I did just read that the floating center span is an urban legend. I based my comment on the multiple harbor tour narrations I heard while showing visiting friends and relatives the town. I should have done some more research.
