~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho

IDmountainhomeafb2

Mountain Home Air Force Base is a United States Air Force installation in the western United States. Located in southwestern Idaho in Elmore County, the base is twelve miles southwest of Mountain Home, which is forty miles southeast of Boise via Interstate 84. The base is also used by the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF), which has a detachment of F-15SG fighters on long term assignment to the base and a squadron composing of RSAF and USAF personnel.

The host unit at Mountain Home since 1972 has been the 366th Fighter Wing (366 FW) of the Air Combat Command (ACC), nicknamed the "Gunfighters." The base's primary mission is to provide combat airpower and combat support capabilities to respond to and sustain worldwide contingency operations.

Mountain Home AFB and the 366th Wing have a rich history that stretches back more than 50 years to the United States' entry into World War II. Although the wing itself was
not activated until after World War II, it shares the World War II heritage of the 366th Operations Group, whose precursor organization, the 366th Fighter Group, stood up
about the same time the base was being built. In early 1991, the Air Force announced that the 366th would become the Air Force's premier "air intervention" composite wing.

The F-15E Strike Eagle is a dual-role fighter designed to perform air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. An array of avionics and electronics systems gives the F-15E the capability to fight at low altitude, day or night and in all weather.

The aircraft uses two crew members, a pilot and a weapon systems officer. Previous models of the F-15 are assigned air-to-air roles; the "E" model is a dual-role fighter. It has the capability to fight its way to a target over long ranges, destroy enemy ground positions and fight its way out.

The aircraft's navigation system uses a laser gyro and a Global Positioning System to continuously monitor the aircraft's position and provide information to the central computer and other systems, including a digital moving map in both cockpits.

The 389th FS "Thunderbolts" are comprised of approximately 400 airmen and more than 21 F-15E aircraft. The squadron is responsible for sustaining combat readiness to conduct a variety of short-notice contingency operations worldwide.

The aircrew train and maintain world-class proficiency to accomplish a vast array of combat missions including close air support, interdiction, defensive counter-air, strategic attack, and suppression of enemy air defenses.

The "T-Bolts" are capable of employing a full arsenal of weaponry including air-to-air missiles, 20mm gun, laser or GPS guided bombs, general purpose munitions, and stand-off weapons.

Not Fatherless

Bible in a Year:

The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.

Romans 8:16 John Sowers in his book Fatherless Generation writes that “No generation has seen as much voluntary father absence as this one with 25 million kids growing up in single-parent homes.” In my own experience, if I’d bumped into my father on the street, I wouldn’t have known him. My parents were divorced when I was very young, and all the photos of my dad were burned. So for years I felt fatherless. Then at age thirteen, I heard the Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9–13) and said to myself, You may not have an earthly father, but now you have God as your heavenly Father.

In Matthew 6:9 we’re taught to pray, “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.” Previously verse 7 says not to “keep on babbling” when praying, and we may wonder how these verses are connected. I realized that because God remembers, we don’t need to repeat. He truly understands, so we don’t need to explain. He has a compassionate heart, so we don’t need to be uncertain of His goodness. And because He knows the end from the beginning, we know His timing is perfect.

Because God is our Father, we don’t need to use “many words” (v. 7) to move Him. Through prayer, we’re talking with a Father who loves and cares for us and made us His children through Jesus.

Reflect & Pray

When have you tried to “move God” in prayer by using many words? How does having a relationship with Him as your Father help you to trust Him?

Dear heavenly Father, thank You for making me Your child and for being a Father that welcomes me into Your presence through prayer.

I was stationed at Mountain Home from 68 to 70. At that time, we had 3 squadrons of RF-4s (reconnaissance) and one squadron of F-4E (fighters) Later, all the F-4s left, and were replaced with F-111s. 😀

Good evening!

Are you hearing fireworks around your neck of the woods?

They are illegal here, but that never seems to stop anybody. LOL.

I was born there in 1958 when my father was CO of the 1st Bombardment Squadron, the oldest squadron in the USAF. Not too long afterwards the squadron turned in their B-47s and reappeared as the 1st Strategic Reconnaissance Squadron at Beale AFB in CA flying the SR-71.
