Hackers suspected to be behind a mass extortion attack that affected hundreds of companies worldwide late on Sunday demanded $70 million to restore the data they are holding ransom, according to a posting on a dark web site.
The demand was posted on a blog typically used by the REvil cybercrime gang, a Russia-linked group that is counted among the cybercriminal world's most prolific extortionists.
The gang has an affiliate structure, occasionally making it difficult to determine who speaks on the hackers' behalf, but Allan Liska of cybersecurity firm Recorded Future said the message "almost certainly" came from REvil's core leadership.

The problem is that the same folks that control "the cloud" probably control the ISPs as well (and the name servers).

It is stupidity. Each company should maintain its own affairs. Putting everything in one place under the management of one company is just stupidity. But the hackers love it because they don’t have to attack each company separately. But there is way more to fear from the cloud model than just hackers.
The internet needs the ability to cut off rogue countries, like China, Russia and N. Korea.
From the frontside, but there’s the actual back side servers that are still normal servers capable of being infected.

“Russia-linked” conpsiracy talk to say that they are linked to the Russian government.
No evidence has ever been presented that this is the case.

There is evidence of Mexican government involvement in human traffickiong and narcoterrorism and we don’t see it presented that way in the press. People make it to the northern border of Mexico riding in truckings and on top of trains and nobody does nothing to stop it even though Mexico’s own policy towards illegal immigration is to “send back them”.
Sheer incompetence on the part of these organization’s IT departments. If I were hit with one of these things, I’d restore my boot drive from media, and restore from my daily backup. At most I might lose a file or two.

I can’t believe all the lame comments here. Sin has been around forever. It does not mean that you are served by ignoring common sense practices to reduce the consequences of crime. In this case they only had to hack one company to cause havoc at a whole bunch of companies. And who is to say that a cloud company itself can be up to now good. And one glitch can also take things down. What happens when the deepstate gang gets control of many companies in this way by simply taking control.

I use Microsoft Office for the contract work I do with my law firm clients. ALL Office apps are non-operational here. The clients confirm their Internet and Microsoft Office apps are also down.
Very concerned on my end because I need to use those apps to make a living.
Any word on a fix or a payment being made? I haven’t seen anything on which companies were hit.
There’s been a fair amount of speculation on various boards about an upcoming widespread Internet/Microsoft downage, but that’s all I’ve personally seen.
Not knowing for sure what is or is not going on is the worst part of it all. :-(
