IOC loosens ban on protest ahead of Tokyo Olympics

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is loosening its ban on protests and rules against athlete expression for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

The IOC's executive board voted to approve guidelines clarifying Rule 50 of the Olympic charter, which prohibits athletes from making any sort of political expression, particularly on medal podiums, in the field of play and at opening and closing ceremonies.

Athletes have pushed back on the rule for years and the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee took the unprecedented step in December of urging the IOC to "end the prohibition of peaceful demonstrations."

The new policy allows athletes to protest on the field of play before their competition, but it maintains that athletes are not allowed to protest on the medal stand. Athletes can protest after leaving the "call room" or similar area or during the introduction of the athlete or athlete's team, per the release by the IOC.

The gestures must follow four sub-guidelines within Rule 50.2. It must be:

"consistent with the Fundamental Principles of Olympism;"

not be targeted directly or indirectly against people, countries, organizations "and/or their dignity;"

not be disruptive, for example expressions during another athlete's national anthem or introduction, or physical interference as such;

not prohibited or limited by rules of the relevant National Olympic Committee (NOC) or relevant international federation.

The guidelines go on to say:

“When expressing their views, athletes are expected to respect the applicable laws, the Olympic values and their fellow athletes. It should be recognized that any behavior and/or expression that constitutes or signals discrimination, hatred, hostility or the potential for violence on any basis whatsoever is contrary to the Fundamental Principles of Olympism.”

Athletes made note that many of the demonstrations they were trying to make at the Olympic games were exemplary of "the goals of Olympism."

If I can live without MLB and the NFL, I can certainly survive without the Olympics.

Goodbye

Time to end the Olympics.

Put the Olympics in Greece. None of this stupid 'round-the-world who-can-subsidize-then-abandon-a-random-city selection bullcrap. Build a beautiful bunch of arenas and so on there.

Definitely get rid of any protests or solicitations or other. Athletes are there to represent their country. Period. Nothing more, nothing less.

Get rid of all the ESPN-8 crap. There's way too many random stupid things there now. If it's an event that even half the countries can't send a competitor to, it's a good place to start cutting this crap.

I'm sure I could come up with more but I just don't care much. Ha.

It’s really sad to see all the facilities that are abandoned after the Games are over.

I have to give credit to Atlanta for a doing a good job of repurposing their facilities after they hosted the Olympics.

They should trim it back to just all the events they had in the 1976 Olympic Games, that’s plenty.

When the Olympics returns to Greece — for all future Olympics — then I MAY watch it.

Not holding my breath, and definitely NOT interested in watch anything related to the “woke” news stories, anti-American diatribes, any of the men participating in women’s events.

Fully expecting China to come up with something to distract from the games in Japan.

It may have looked good on tv but since I actually was at the games I found the atmosphere gloomy with the heavy security from the fallout of 72. Also a bunch of the African nations were boycotting because New Zealand’s rugby team had played South Africa. Taiwan was banned from calling itself the Republic of China by the IOC. The Queen looked nice opening the games in pink. One taxi driver I had was surprised how well she spoke French. I think he must have grown up with the idea she was the devil incarnate.

Well, supposedly, the IOC always calls for the “Olympic Truce” to be in effect during the Games. It is where all conflicts around the world are SUPPOSED to take a break from the time the Cauldron is lit until it’s extinguished.

Think China will abide by that?

Screw this crap. I can’t even watch the Olympics anymore. You’re gonna have all this kneeling and disrespecting going on. Piss on them all.

The few sports events I watch now are usually accompanied by silence, as I turn off the audio and decide for myself what I’m watching. It’s much more enjoyable than listening to talking heads yammer on.

If I were to watch the games, which I won’t, it would be instructive to compare the number of whiners are from the US with those from any other country. I’m already pretty sure of the outcome.

The Brits will be just as bad. Their soccer team kneels before every game in the Euros.

I hope Denmark crushes them.
