Then they enjoyed a lengthy period of respect and admiration during the mid-east eternity.

This is uplifting (pardon the pun) news about the Civil Air Patrol teaching our youth to fly. But this forum allows me to voice fears that I have about our government on this 4th of July eve.
I have been worried that in the name of diversity, the US is going to loosen the standards for job qualifications. The scariest would be pilots and doctors. This is not new. General Chuck Yeager mentioned, in his autobiography, that when he was instructing future pilots he was pressured to admit a student who was not qualified and (if I remember correctly) later was dismissed for poor performance.

Civil Air Patrol is an outstanding adolescent leadership program.

I was a junior volunteer in my teens and enjoyed it. I also got some good training in First Aid. They took us up in their Grumman Cheeta, and taught us basic flying skills.

Yes things opened up a lot with deregulation and the massive expansion of aviation/airlines in general. Peopl who hung in there adding hours, pursuing their multi engine and commercial ratings won big a few years down the line. 1977 however was still in the post war era of aviation which was largely military trained people.

I am a private pilot and have been for 35 years.
Light sport was supposed to be an inexpensive intro to flying.
A typical Light sport plane is near $100,000.
I asked an exec from Piper why a J3 Cub cost $125,000 about 10 years ago?
He said it cost about $30,000 and the rest goes in to a slush fund for future law suits/.
