Tokyo (AFP) - Athletes at Tokyo 2020 will be allowed to "express their views" before and after competing -- but not on the podium -- after Olympics chiefs relaxed some of the rules for protests at the event.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) released new guidelines Friday softening a long-standing ban on political protests at the Games.
It means athletes will now be allowed to take the knee before play begins to highlight racial injustice, speak to the media and post online about their views, or wear clothing with a protest slogan at a press conference.
But political statements during events, victory ceremonies and at the Olympic Village are still off the cards, the IOC said.
Protests must not be "targeted, directly or indirectly, against people, countries, organisations and/or their dignity", the sporting body said in a statement.
They also cannot be "disruptive" to other competitors, such as unfurling a flag as a team is being introduced.
"The new guidelines are a result of our extensive consultation with the global athletes' community," Kirsty Coventry, chair of the IOC's athletes commission, said in a statement.

Well, there goes another few million people who will tune out the Olympics, including me.
Dumb. People don’t want to hear about athletics from politicians, and they don’t want to hear about politics from athletes.
But, Olympics are now part of the NWO agenda to advance CRT and BLM concepts globally.
The Olympic committee will probably be mystified as their viewer numbers and ticket sales decline year after year.
In auto racing, a yellow flag indicates special circumstances that indicate that normal rules don’t apply at the moment. Will somebody in Tokyo be waving a special flag to show that there is no protest allowed now? And if multiple events are happening at the same time, is the “protest/no protest” flag the same for everybody, or will each event have its own protest allowed time frame?
Gutless wonders.
I hope all involved lose their shirts.

Disappointing. If there was anything one used to be able to count on with the Olympics, it was the IOC being strict about the “no politics” rule. Leftists ruin everything.
I have no plans to watch regardless, but with this relaxation of rules, just imagine all the America haters and virtue signalers we’ll be hearing about. The toilet of civilization continues to swirl.
The trouble is politics is built into the modern games when nations compete against each other. There was a survey done ages ago where if there weren’t national teams just individual athletes representing themselves at the Olympics the audience would plummet to next to nothing. The olympics long ago chose socialism to be their ethos and politics so I stopped watching.
Once they have cracked the door to allow political protests a little it becomes only a matter of a short time before the door is fully open and they will be allowed on the winners’ stands and wherever. Watch!
The early Olympic games did not consider the nations but only the athletes. They were for amateur athletes only and no government sponsorship or support permitted. Things have changed over the years.
If someone protests COVID lockdowns, masks or vaccines the rules will snap back.
Or try protesting big tech censorship...
Our athletes are all woke these days. Just watch AMerican Ninja Warrior. They all represent some faction such as BLM. We are not watching much sports these days if at all.
I will not watch one minute of the wokelympics. That includes the opening and closing ceremonies. The “activists” have ruined it.
The sad irony is that I knew the name of the “oppressed” third place athlete in the hammer throw before knowing the two that paced higher than her.
By doing this, the Olympic competitors are just ruining it for everyone except the few who may side with their ignorant attitudes.. The rest of us will switch channels. We don’t need this crap, nor will we put up with it.
Great. A bunch of entitled brats yelling “America sucks,” and “Israel sucks.”
Adios Olympics. May the whole damned organization turn to dust and thrown in the dustbin of failure.
