ST. PAUL, Ore. (AP) — On his 38th birthday, Sebastian Francisco Perez, an immigrant from Guatemala, played chess with his nephew. The next day, he went to work at a nursery in a rural Oregon town as the thermometer soared well above 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37.8 Celsius).
Perez collapsed that day, June 26, as a heat wave baked the Pacific Northwest in all-time, record-high temperatures. The workers had been moving irrigation lines when they noticed Perez wasn’t there and found him. They called his nephew, Pedro Lucas, who arrived to find his uncle unconscious and dying.
Paramedics tried to revive him, but Perez didn’t make it.
In 2019, two of Lucas’ cousins and a third person were killed when a pickup truck slammed into a van near Salem, Oregon, carrying them and 10 other Guatemalans home from work at a Christmas tree farm.
The fact that tragedy has struck Lucas’ family again leaves him in disbelief.
“I don’t understand the things that sometimes happen,” Lucas said in a phone interview in Spanish.
Last time, he used donations to pay a funeral home to have the bodies of his two cousins and the other man returned to Guatemala from Oregon.
Lucas remembers his uncle’s last night as one of joy as they played games.
“He was happy with me that night,” Lucas said.

Thats your reaction? Not an iota of compassion? Hey, at least this guy was working.
Summer Weather is Hot: Women and Minorities Hardest Hit!!!!
They can go back home if they don’t like the weather here.
I’m not impressed with a bleeding heart liberal sob story about illegals suffering in the heat wave as is the heat wave is selective and targeting only illegals.
as if……
Hot and dry in the West but cold and wet in the East = Not Global Warming
Poor guy. To save his family they should be deported back to their Honduran paradise immediately.
More likely an illegal working. No excuses for not drinking enough water. I’m as whitebread as it gets, and was outside for a whole lot of that little hot spell, but survived.
You’re right, I have little compassion for invaders that steal jobs and are stupid. I hope his family goes back home PRONTO!
Had he stayed in Guatemala he would still be alive.
It was indeed the hottest couple of days in MODERN RECORED TIME, which only goes back about 150 years. It is highly unlikely it was the highest temperature EVER, since much of the region once had a sub-tropical climate. Even in the last 10,000 years of the post ice-age era, it is likely there have been hotter days.
I was stuck in a town for 3 weeks in Utah once, and the temp there was 112. I literal burned blisters on my feet just fro walking 1/2 mile on the pavement. It was brutal, but thankfully I didn’t have to work in that heat, but everyone In The town and surrounding areas had to, and I don’t remember anyone dying from it, though I suppose they could have and just didn’t hear about it
So this is tragedy because it involves “immigrants”.
That is not sarcasm. It - the article - was, purposely, a narrative to derive sympathy not for just any persons, but specifically for “immigrants”. Such a motive is immoral because it is not universal but political and politically specific.
There were at least 75 dead from heat and he’s the only one that was on a green card. The others were citizens so why just talk about the Guatemalan? Because it fits the leftist narrative.
What about the others that dropped dead?
I’m not seeing in this article where it says this guy was an illegal. Maybe he was, maybe he wasn’t. I know many Guatemalans that are working here legally.
As was mentioned, this guy was here working, apparently not being a violent criminal and not being a drain on the country. It is not a Conservative value to dehumanize people just because we have a broken immigration system. Whose fault is that?
>>> Not an iota of compassion? <<<
None. My compassion ended with the death of Kate Steinle.
The Deplorables want a Comprehensive Immigration Enforcement bill, missing since 1986 ONE TIME amnesty. Since that amnesty was granted already, a second amnesty is off the table. What remains is the enforcement the Democrats have disallowed since then.
The List of Comprehensive Immigration Enforcement, missing since 1986 goes like this -
1) southern barrier;
2) require eVerify to hire;
3) end all chain migration;
4) birthright per Minor v. Happersett (plural parents);
5) end work visas;
6) 10-year moratorium on all new applications for citizenship (40 years to allow workplace automation effects on downsizing population);
7) Set up an illegal aliens’ victim restitution fund.
Enactment of these provisions will motivate illegal aliens to SELF-deport, and remove colonizadors from our welfare rolls.
The Associated Press illegal sob story number 12,938,746 everybody bring some home pity party to ensue.
I call this string of “tragedies” KARMA.
Zero F given about boo hoo illegals.
