ORWELLIAN: Canada Moves to Ban 'Hate Speech' Online, Punishable by a $40,000 Fine

Last week, Canada’s Liberal Party headed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau proposed new legislation to criminalize “hate speech” online, punishable by a $50,000 fine (roughly $40,000 U.S.D.), paid to the government. Government officials, including the attorney general and the minister of public safety, announced the new bill on Wednesday.

“Canadians expect their government to take action against hate speech and hate crimes. These legislative changes would improve the remedies available to victims of hate speech and hate crimes, and would hold individuals accountable. The actions we are taking today will help protect the vulnerable, empower those who are victimized and hold individuals to account for the hatred they spread online,” David Lametti, minister of justice and attorney general, said in a statement.

Lametti introduced amendments to Canada’s Criminal Code, the Canadian Human Rights Act, and the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Lametti and his allies justified their Orwellian move by claiming that “hate speech” online can turn into “offline hate.”

“Too many people and communities in Canada are harmed and victimized by hate speech, which is often amplified and spread online. Online hate can turn into offline hate with devastating impacts on communities and families. We have a responsibility to victims to take action to combat hate online and continue to build a more inclusive Canada,” the Justice Department explained in a statement.

I can see it now...

A Canadian citizen posts, “Justin Trudeau is Fidel Castro’s offspring, and he needs to be defeated this election.”

Hate speech. 40k Canadian.

Which goes into Trudeau’s campaign coffers.

Nice, if you’re a tyrant.

RE: So, if I post something they consider hateful in America on a Canadian-based website, can I then be extradited to answer charges?

Technically, YES. Do they have the necessary resources to identify you or force FR to identify you? NOT YET ( but they’ll get there eventually ).

Also, “Hate Speech” can mean ANYTHING they deem it to be.

“...criminalize “hate speech” online...”

A couple of things to display the failure of socialism like even Canada’s and this can’t happen Constitutionally in the US:

Hate speech is not a victimless crime unless violence is
to follow from the speaker. Speech in the US is considered free within reason and opinions are like posteriors. This is supported by law:

In the United States, there are no laws against hate speech. Due to rights protected by the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment, a person can say just about anything he or she wants to another person or group. By itself, such speech is allowed to take place without penalty under the law.

A person hurling insults, making rude statements, or disparaging comments about another person or group is merely exercising his or her right to free speech. This is true even if the person or group targeted by the speaker is a member of a protected class. According to U.S. law, such speech is fully permissible and is not defined as hate speech.

Under the First Amendment, American citizens have the legal right to say whatever they’d like to. While much ado is often made about so-called “hate speech”, no satisfactory definition for this type of speech exists within the confines of the law. Not to be confused with “hate crimes,” a person’s speech does not affect another person’s physical condition or personal property and is, therefore, not punishable by law.

A 1969 U.S. Supreme Court case ruled it was perfectly legal for Clarence Brandenburg, a Ku Klux Klan member in Ohio, to speak in favor of violence toward minorities as long as he was not directly encouraging people to engage in violence or other activities that were against the law. So, while the court did not deem his speech to have broken the law, a line was drawn between speech supporting or favoring violence and speech that actually directly incites violence. The former is protected by law, but the latter is an actual crime.

Also, “Hate Speech” can mean ANYTHING they deem it to be.

Just make sure when you do the hate speech, you do it in both English and French.

The bottom line is all they need do is find a judge willing to authorize an extradition order . . . of which there are plenty waiting for the opportunity.

How will they define “hate”?

They won't, that's the whole point. Inoffensive speech doesn't need protecting. Any government that bans "Hate Speech" should be tossed out at the next election, as a matter of principle.

What may be hateful to you may not be hateful to me, so, who decides what is hate? If I say I hate you because you are heterosexual would I be charged with a hate crime?

I guess our proclamation in the Charter of Rights for free speech really doesn’t mean anything.

Totally true. Call Islam a religion of evil, and expect to pay $50,000. Say the same about Christianity. Crickets.

Most Canadians are clueless lemmings. I bet 90% of the population doesn’t even know about this bill yet.

Homosexuality is the prime cause of this legislation. Too many wily Canadians like myself who hate homosexuality can be targeted now. Facebook will fold for the Canadians government and help them in “rooting out hate” I am guessing.

Soon enough there will be hate speech against christians and christianity, so they won’t enforce it.

Canada should use Wikipedia to define what constitutes hate speech.

That way the Wiki-activists can add new rules every day until all speech is forbidden.
