California to extend eviction moratorium through September

alifornia will extend its ban on evictions while covering back rent and utility payments for people who fell behind during the pandemic.

The state will pay for this under a $7.2 billion plan that Governor Gavin Newsom called the "largest and most comprehensive renter protection deal in the United States."

California placed a moratorium on evictions after Newsom imposed the nation's first statewide shut down in March 2020 and ordered most businesses to shut down because of the pandemic.

Officials haven't said how many people will qualify under this new plan but there's enough money to provide more than $10,000 each to a half-million tenants. All of the funds are coming from the federal government.

Not from landlords it isn’t. Seriously, you’ve got property owners who haven’t been paid their due rent in a year now but who still have to make their mortgage payments on those properties. What are they supposed to do? When they finally surrender the properties to the banks, they’ll be called every name in the book for being terrible people putting renters’ (squatters really) homes at risk. And the banks will catch flack for being terrible enough to sell the homes to recoup their investment.

The whole thing is absurd and totally unsustainable. You will always have people who buy and people who rent. But if the people who rent don’t have to pay anymore, they’ll quickly find that they don’t have anywhere left to rent. The rental market will collapse and disappear because nobody wants to bother anymore.

Those people will still have to pay back rent; it’s not like they got a free ride all this time.

If you think housing availability was bad before in California, just think how it will be with the smaller landlords out of business! Now it will be Corporate landlords like Blackrock and try getting a repair order through that phone-tree! Then, after the next pandemic, California will make it all government owned, just like they want all medical provider! YUCK!

Except that is not what they think.

They don’t know that if they didn’t pay 25% of their rent then they are on the hook for the full amount.

You knew that was going to happen, didn’t you?

Government does not have the right to invalidate a valid contract. The contract between an owner and a renter has been torn up, depriving the owner of his/her right to a payment for the use of the property.

The left hates private property and saw a wonderful opportunity opening up as soon as the virus hit. They would use it as an excuse to show property owners that their rights no longer exist.

The owner must continue to provide an apartment, without recompense. He must pay the insurance, the taxes, the mortgage, the upkeep. Without being paid for it.

See how easy it was to eliminate private property? If they can do it to landlords, they will do it to anyone else. How long before owners of multi-family dwellings are forced to accept freeloaders? How long before they come for us?

What a wonderful virus! It provided an opportunity for the left to get rid of Trump, to train the folks in submission, to condition the folks to not being allowed to move about freely, to once again accuse the folks of racism, to give a gift to china and to go a few more steps toward totally eliminating free speech.

Until they pass a law or order eliminating that requirement. The Dims will do anything to stay in power.

“Government does not have the right to invalidate a valid contract.”

The California officials responsible are in rebellion against our Constitution and should be removed under Amendment XIV, Section 3. Courts, which have the power to enforce Section 1, should therefore have the power to enforce Section 3.

“What are they supposed to do?”

Probably sell out in a real estate crazed market.

This is one reason why institutional investors are buying up homes like mad. So many distressed sellers. This is destroying the mom and pop landlords ...

Do you honestly believe that those receiving this money are going to hand it over to the landlord?

Imagine the fraud that will occur with this. They will do as little verification as they did with the unemployment claims.

So, they are all saving their Money for the big Balloon Payment to the Landlord whenever this idiocy ends?

That should happen about the time the sElection results are overturned and POTUS Trump is reinstated.

I heard that they had to be paying at least 25% of their rent to qualify for the money.
