CNN contributor Van Jones reacted with emotion Friday on “Newsroom” to the 22-and-a-half year sentence of Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd.
Discussing how with good behavior, Chauvin is likely to serve closer to 15 years, Senior legal analyst Elie Honig said, “Justice is imperfect. This is a serious sentence. Derek Chauvin will be in prison for 15 years. He’s 45 now until he’s 60. That said, I think this is light. I think the judge should’ve sentenced him more. Minnesota guidelines say you can double the 15 years if there is one aggravator. This judge found four aggravators and didn’t really come super close to doubling it.”
Jones said, “Very disappointing, very disappointing 15 years, I know people doing 15 years for victimless crimes of drug possession. Very disappointing the level of any one of those aggravators. What this man did, it should’ve been the maximum of the maximum. This is disappointing. I don’t think it’s going to cause outrage. But it’s a punch in the gut. This guy’s life is worth more than 15 years. It was. What that officer did is worth more than 15 years. Law enforcement across the country should look at something like this and say, look, you can’t do this type of stuff. You’re never going to come back home. It’s disappointing.”
When Honig pointed out there were two federal indictments still pending against Chauvin, Jones said, “The feds can come in and do more, and they should do more because this is not justice.”

Mohammad Noor was a black Minneapolis police officer who was convicted of killing a white woman named Justine Damond. Damond had called to report a possible rape in her neighborhood. She was outside her home. She was not being arrested, nor charged with anything.
Noor got 12 1/2 years.
Derek Chauvin was a white Minneapolis police officer who was convicted of killing a black man named George Floyd. Floyd was being arrested and had large amounts of drugs in his system (none of which justifies killing him.)
Chauvin got 22 1/2 years.
See the difference?
Equity?
I doubt it will take a year. Does it never occur to the people who are cheering on the left’s totally fascist behavior that they will be next on the target list? All the idiot whites marching in the street and holding up their fists shouting “BLACK POWER” will soon be the enemy.
Right, Floyd’s crimes weren’t victimless either. The left acts as though George Floyd was a saint.
if you listened or read the testimony you would know he was still breathing, and the ambulance was right there trying to get through the angry crowd to the victim
All you questions were answered in the defense testimony
agreed about cops quitting- they put their lives on the line every single day/night, and then end up in prison for doing their jobs? it aint right
Considering the CNN chyron stated that Chauvin could get up to 40 years, CNN set the bar high so that when the verdict came in it would be well under the 40 year sentence. This is an example of how CNN is trying to stir up the masses. It was no more a gut-punch than CNN smacking people in the back of the head with their “he could get up to 40 years”. All other news agencies were reporting up to 30 years. I am surprised no one noted this.
Derek Chauvin is serving OJ Simpson’s sentence.
If you have a life sentence in CA, you can apply for parole in just 7 short years.
Not a knee on the shoulder?
a year of rioting insured that there would not be a fair trial. I wont say guilty or not guilty but I will say that the judges misconduct along with those prosecuting has insured that there will always be a Question about this trial.
Devon Dunham was a black ex con that thought he was entitled to Mr Stevens' 'cause...slavery.
Despite eyewitnesses, physical evidence linking Dunham to the crime, DNA evidence linking him to the gun and a VIDEO TAPED CONFESSION, a jury acquitted Dunham of all charges
