I have no issue if individual towns want to do this on their own. I think its stupid but its their call. Plus I don't live in their town.

I would have a major issue if the Feds did this or if the states did this without a referendum.

Interesting. I perused the 1860 census and it shows 0 African-American slaves in Massachusetts. It does show 9,602 “Free Colored.”

Then I went to the Civil War Research Center and looked up statistics for Massachusetts.

Killed and Mortally Wounded 6,115
Died of Disease 5,530
Died as Prisoner 1,483
Died from Accidents 257
Died from Causes Except Battle 557
Total Deaths 13,942

I would suggest that “payment for past harms” was paid in blood long ago.

My great,great,great grandfather for whom I was named (my first and middle real name) volunteered from Michigan and fought under General Sherman in several bloody battles. He lived but that paid some dues. IMHO.
