MINNEAPOLIS — A Minnesota judge denied a request from Derek Chauvin's attorney for a new trial hours before the former Minneapolis police officer is to be sentenced for murder in the death of George Floyd.
Hennepin County District Judge Peter Cahill, who will sentence Chauvin Friday afternoon, also denied the defense's request for a hearing on jury misconduct.
Prosecutors have asked that Chauvin receive 30 years in prison. His lawyer is seeking probation.
The presumptive sentence for a person like Chauvin, who had no criminal history, is 12½ years for second-degree murder. Cahill could sentence him to as little as 10 years and eight months or as much as 15 years and remain within the guideline range.

In a sane appellate court system, this would be deemed an easy mistrial.
Interfering with the Approved Conclusion is forbidden.

Everyone deserves a fair trial. This guy didn’t get one, any idiot wouldn’t want what happened to happen to them.
This is about politics, optics, and not about justice. It’s very very sad. All part of the new Fascist States of America.

A local policeman told me that the big mistake police made in the Floyd arrest was that they let him out of the patrol car so he could, at his request, lie down. Otherwise they could have quickly driven away.
The policeman also told me that the “knee on the back” restraint was used frequently including by him and it was not dangerous as long as the knee stayed away from the neck and maybe he said the lower back.
Absolutely no surprise there. Continue to work on the appeal.
So the rioters get what they want. The USA is screwed. The riots will continue until they’re stopped or we’ve given the country over to the left, at which point we’ll wish for the days of mere riots.
That about sums it up.
They will, but they will use other prison inmates to do it.
