Zeldin has raised $2.5 million.
Any Republican candidate would face obstacles in a state that has a large Democratic Party enrollment advantage that has nearly doubled in size since 2002, the last time a GOP candidate won a statewide office.
Zeldin is closely aligned with Trump, a polarizing figure who is unpopular among the largely Democratic voters in New York City.

In a statement, Astorino’s campaign spokesman said the candidate isn’t giving up, even if party leaders choose Zeldin.
Spokesman Phil Oliva said it was clear early on that the “party establishment had a preferred candidate.” He said Astorino is prepared to petition his way onto the primary ballot next June, and he believes Astorino has the best chance of winning voters in Westchester and in New York City.

It won’t matter who the people vote for. The winner will be decided by whoever controls the ballot boxes.
if Astorino has the best chance of winning NYC and Westchester, then it’s likely he’s a mega-RINO.

This is a political decision driven by big and powerful people who bat around phrases like “electability”.
One big factor will be the presence of Cuomo in the race.
If Cuomo is in the race not pulling out then he is vulnerable.
Might backfire and end up with a dem replacing Zeldin and Zeldin not winning gov. Stupid plan from the stupid party
Either Zeldin or Astorino would be good, but Astorino has already lost to Killer once.
