It was given through Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation and the blood of the Union armies. The slaves did not free themselves. Apparently they don’t like to be reminded of this.

Exactly right. On July 4, 1776 patriots declared their freedom. They went and fought and died for freedom.

On June 19, 1865 blacks were told they were free. They deserved to be free but for the most part they did not earn their freedom.
