The big nanny state with it’s centralized decision making ends up being like this.
Liberals in the West think that somehow “oppression” at the hand of a social democratic system is acceptable and different than “oppression” from a communist state. It’s still just “oppression.”
You cannot have it both ways.
You either have the big nanny state that protects you and provides safety in all aspects: physical, economic, social stability/security... or you have free citizens with limited government.
As government grows, the rights of citizens shrink. Eventually you end up with a oppressive system even if you have elections, even if you have a Constitution...
You end up with a technocracy, and if you challenge the decisions of said technocracy acting in the public best interest (supposedly), you end up being punished.
