I have tremendous respect for Clarence Thomas. Of all the justices now on the bench, I think he is the best. And I understand, under normal circumstances, how any justice would place value on “respecting the institution” and would be reluctant to air any dirty laundry.
But in these extraordinary times, it would be really great if Thomas could come out and say, “It’s clear that Roberts is owned by someone. His actions are suspicious, and the things he says in private make it clear that, to him, the outcome of many cases have been predetermined for political reasons.”
That assumes Thomas is free to act.
I would no longer make that assumption.
