Pelosi rejects gas tax to cover infrastructure costs

Pelosi rejects gas tax to cover infrastructure costs © Greg Nash Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Thursday that she opposes an increase in the gas tax as a way to pay for new infrastructure projects, joining other liberals in her caucus in rejecting a potential provision of a nascent public works package being negotiated in the Senate.

"I'm not even sure if it's in, but one thing they were going to do was expand the gas tax. I would not be for that," Pelosi told reporters in the Capitol.

Among the offset provisions floated by a group of bipartisan senators scrambling for an infrastructure agreement is an increase in the gas tax, which was last raised in 1993. The law that did so did not provide automatic inflationary increases.

The tax increase on gas will come after the infrastructure money gets wasted.

“The tax increase on gas will come after the infrastructure money gets wasted.”

They want to get as much destruction in as they can before the sheep actually feel the pain.

She’s against it, until she’s for it.

She’ll rationalize the gas tax increase by pointing to
‘no other choices’. And then she’ll say she tried, but her hands were tied.

“California has the highest gas taxes in the nation. According to the American Petroleum Institute, the state’s taxes and fees add 63.05 cents to the price of a gallon of gasoline. Including federal taxes, Californians pay 81.45 cents per gallon in government-imposed charges.”

Pelosi’s home state can’t handle it.

No surprise here. There are a number of states out there that are giving some consideration to ELIMINATING the gasoline tax entirely.

The problem we are facing right now is that we are approaching the wrong side of the Laffer Curve in gasoline taxes. Raising the gasoline tax is likely to result in LESS revenue in many states, as people drive less, buy more fuel-efficient vehicles, or buy electric cars that don’t use any gasoline at all.

Thank you... I was wondering where that critical balance was going to happen. There is such a thing as “running off all your customers with pricing” and actually losing revenue in the long run.

That’s a surprise. I didn’t think a Dem ever met a Tax they didn’t like. Maybe it’s a head fake. She really wants double the amount that tax would harvest.

Dems are going to have to come to terms with the ever increasing number of electric vehicles on the roads, gas taxes are going to start withering away.

I will say that all the “work from home” arrangements during the COVID fiasco have drastically reduced gas tax revenues across much of the nation.

Pelosi’s home state of CA already has the nation’s highest gas tax. The money is swept into the state’s general fund where is is embezzled by leftist special interests and politically connected contractors while the roads and bridges crumble.

Yep. Opposing the gas tax increase publicly while secretly working on a mileage tax which will hurt those of us in rural areas or those who enjoy travel.

How about a tax on electric vehicles so the rich owners of those toys pay their “fair” share?

They won’t call it a tax. It will be called a “mileage convenience assessment for the children.”
