Californians encouraged to reduce energy use, grid operator issues statewide flex alert for Thursday evening

California's Independent System Operator has issued a statewide flex alert for Thursday June 17 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Cal ISO issued the voluntary call to conserve energy Wednesday afternoon as temperatures in the Bay Area soared in the first heat wave of the season and record breaking heat blankets the West Coast this week.

By Wednesday, Fairfield reached triple digits. Many other spots in the East Bay, including Fremont, Walnut Creek and Concord are already getting close. The heat is expected to peak on Thursday, with an excessive heat warning in effect through Friday night for many areas in the Bay.

Earlier in the day Cal ISO said the grid is stable for Wednesday and there is no expectation of rotating power outages. Forecasts also show enough reserves to cover demand Thursday evening, but the grid operator had warned to be vigilant for a flex alert.

It asks Californians to set thermostats to 78 degrees or higher, turn off unnecessary lights and avoid use of major appliances.

For more information on ways to conserve energy during the flex alert check here.

Flex alerts are typically issued as solar energy production drops off during evening hours.

Summerlike heat arrived with spring still on the calendar as a dome of high pressure spread over the West.

Had three jobs this week up in Sebastopol Forestville and Santa Rosa and I’ve been spending time at the Russian River

It’s a Mickey Mouse little creek where people pay to float or canoe down the little shallow Creek but it is cool I’ll tell you that!

My new favorite spot. lake Sonoma

Lake Sonoma is stunningly beautiful and completely and utterly remote

Can’t provide enough electricity, can’t provide enough water, but they can build a train to nowhere....wait, never mind.

Californians to Cal ISO -- FU!! Build some power plants! Meet our needs. It really isn't that hard. We did it for well over 100 years.

Unfortunately, we’ve been on this stupid “Negawatt” trajectory for over 30 years. It has greatly accelerated with the greens capturing the federal government regulators and insisting coal and gas plants be shut down and only windmills and solar be built.

Any energy engineer knows this is crap and will not work. At least real energy engineers who were classically trained and not today’s engineers steeped in gaia crap.

It’s 117deg in Las Vegas right now, with 5% humidity.

So it’s a dry heat.

Like the heat that hits your face when you open the oven.
