Victoria Cooper thought her drinking habits in college were just like everyone else’s. Shots at parties. Beers while bowling. Sure, she got more refills than some and missed classes while nursing hangovers, but she couldn’t have a problem, she thought.
“Because of what my picture of alcoholism was — old men who brown-bagged it in a parking lot — I thought I was fine,” said Cooper, now sober and living in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
That common image of who is affected by alcohol disorders, echoed throughout pop culture, was misleading over a decade ago when Cooper was in college. And it’s even less representative today.
For nearly a century, women have been closing the gender gap in alcohol consumption, binge-drinking and alcohol use disorder. What was previously a 3-1 ratio for risky drinking habits in men versus women is closer to 1-to-1 globally, a 2016 analysis of several studies suggested.
And the latest U.S. data from 2019 shows that women in their teens and early 20s reported drinking and getting drunk at higher rates than their male peers — in some cases for the first time since researchers began measuring such behavior.

Don’t they mean to say “birthing people”?
Barfing people?
Thought they could do everything better and that they were stronger.
Hmmm. Reality isn’t living up to female words.
Go to an AA meeting.....There are generally equal amounts of men and women in attendance.
Alcoholism is an equal opportunity afflicter it’s just women are generally better at masking it and usually get away with it for a longer period of time.
In my experience, they are also as “slutty” as men now.
>>missed classes while nursing hangovers
Generally a sign things are off the rails.
Same going for employment
There is an area of opportunity between being prone to sickness and being prone to being prone.
You've come a long way, baby.
I (fortunately) don't know enough about the topic to really debate it, but I don't think this has always been the case.
There had been a study done on this about twenty years ago and IIRC, the ratio for the "problem drinkers" 65+ was about 5:1 (men:women) and it didn't begin to even out until it reached the twenty-somethings.
The sociologists were already sounding the alarm about it then.
I was born in ‘54. When growing up and into the early ‘70’s, if you were passed on the road by someone being an a$$hole, it was a male. Until sometime around about ‘72, the driver being a male was a certainty. Then, the ratio began to change and there was an ever increasing chance that anyone acting like an idiot could be a woman. Today, it’s probably a fifty/fifty chance. At the same time, the female percentage of convicts also began to climb. It’s not fifty/fifty, but females make up almost 7% of the prison population today. As a landlord, I have lost three of my seven rental renters within the last year, because the woman, went to prison...for drugs. Not the man...the woman. All three were stay at home married women; two of them with small children. The husband supported the family and the woman got involved with drugs. From following these cases, I can tell you the judges bent over backwards trying to give them a chance to stay out of prison and in every case, they violated probation.
Feminism, equality, and rising expectation that women are equal to men in all things has its dark side. You see it everywhere and nowhere does it get more ridiculous than in movies where a 98 pound woman can knock out a 240 pound man with a single right cross to the jaw. (By the way, I’m okay with a female lead. But the moment I see her do something physically impossible just because she’s “equal” I turn it off.)
You’ve come a long way baby.
If so, it didn't work.
This is good news for ugly dudes.
Bfl
If you study the chart you see that women aren’t drinking more, men are drinking less.
This proves that men are misogynists!
I stopped drinking and that really screwed up the sampling.
And they can behave just as badly.
I can’t stand the movie trend of bad a** fighting women. It’s so nonsensical. It sets up girls/women with stupid ideas and makes men think they can take it.
They can’t.
