Rookie Cameron Kinley was signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent following the 2021 NFL Draft, but he won’t be able to suit up for the defending Super Bowl champs after the U.S. Naval Academy denied his request to delay his service.
Kinley, who was a team captain for the Navy as well as a class president, participated in the Buccaneers’ rookie minicamp with the school’s permission. On Monday afternoon, Kinley released a statement regarding the ongoing situation.

Dragon post?
Roger Staubach did his service before becoming Dallas quarterback.
Roger Thomas Staubach (born February 5, 1942), nicknamed "Roger the Dodger", "Captain America" and "Captain Comeback",[1] is an American former professional football player who was a quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys in the National Football League (NFL).
He attended the U.S. Naval Academy where he won the 1963 Heisman Trophy, and after graduation he served in the U.S. Navy, including a tour of duty in Vietnam.
Staubach joined Dallas in 1969 and played with the club during all 11 seasons of his career. He led the team to the Super Bowl five times, four as the starting quarterback.
He led the Cowboys to victories in Super Bowl VI and Super Bowl XII. Staubach was named Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl VI, becoming the first of four players to win both the Heisman Trophy and Super Bowl MVP, along with Jim Plunkett, Marcus Allen, and Desmond Howard.
He was named to the Pro Bowl six times during his 11-year NFL career.
He was the executive chairman of Jones Lang LaSalle until his retirement in 2018.
He is regarded as one of the best quarterbacks of all time.[2]
When I saw the headline Staubach was the first thought I had.
I didn’t particularly like the Cowboys but I admired Staubach. Fulfilled his Navy commitments THEN played football. Back when men of character went to the military academies.
Sure seemed like it dragged on for a long time!

I get the ee reference, but what is a dragon post?
Napoleon McCallum tried to do this in the early ‘80’s. The Secretary of the Navy said, “No dice. Report for duty.”
??? I dunno.

That’s right. The Navy owns you for 6 years after the academy sewer pea.

I liked Staubach both as a player and person. He did his service, did not try to alter his post academy time and still ended up as one of the best QBs in NFL history. His post NFL time has also been above reproach.
The Navy didn’t give him a waiver, but McCallum actually played his rookie season in the NFL while he was still on active duty. The Navy assigned him to Long Beach so he could play for the Los Angeles Raiders. There was a lot of controversy over this at the time because Navy Secretary Lehman was bending over backwards to let these star athletes out of their commitments. Basketball center David Robinson was allowed to start his NBA career after serving only two years, right around the same time McCallum was playing for the Raiders.
David Robinson was in a bit of a different position. He grew (I saw him as a Plebe and it really was late growth) at the Acedemy from 6’7 to 7’1. That made him medically ineligible for line service/service at sea. So his obligation was cut to two years.
How do you feel?
What does that mean?
I am from Dallas and used to be an usher in the Cotton Bowl in the 70’s. It was always a joy back then to watch the Dallas Cowboys play.
The 80’s and 90’s, not so much.
