Adversaries to the US are capable of shutting down the nation’s electrical grid, Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm admitted Sunday, saying that such cybersecurity attacks are “happening all the time.”
Granholm warned of the system’s vulnerabilities — amid an uptick of ransomware sieges — on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
“Yeah, they do,” Granholm told host Jake Tapper when asked if foreign actors have the ability to make the power grid go dark.
“There are very malign actors who are trying, even as we speak,” she explained. “There are thousands of attacks on all aspects of the energy sector and the private sector generally.”

From this article below at Breitbart, it seems she is trying to put pressure on Republicans as they need 10 for bipartisan bill...And so putting fear into GOP and the general public that we had better pass the bill or there could be a grid attack and it will be GOP’s fault...
Sad reality is that probably little spending goes to actually hardening the grid.

In my world, in the energy space, Republicans have pushed for pieces of the energy infrastructure that the president had put into the American jobs plan that are not in their counter offer. For example, they’ve been talking about investing in the transmission grid. That’s infrastructure. Both making it more resilient, making it cyber-proof, expanding capacity. That’s not in their counter offer. They’ve been talking about expanding and supporting nuclear. That was in the president’s plan.”

There’s so much despair there in terms of loss of fossil fuel jobs. So the president put in his plan the ability for workers like coal miners to be able to be put to work in reclaiming abandoned coal mines and oil and gas wells. Republicans have talked about that. They have voted for it. That’s not in their bill. And that — it’s not in their counterproposal, including removing carbon pollution from fossil fuel industries by putting pipes underground to take that carbon pollution and store it underground. Those are infrastructure plays that Republicans have voted for and talked about. It was in Biden’s plan. It’s not in theirs. It’s just curious why there isn’t more coming together. The president still has hope. Joe Manchin still had hope.

Granholm added, “The clock is ticking. There is an endpoint to this discussion. Perhaps there can be a meshing of efforts. Ultimately, we have to get to 10 Republican votes to be able to pass this in regular order. That’s the hope.”

Our electric company is more interested in throwing our payment checks to building a gazebo and planting flowers at a park than strengthening the infrastructure so we don’t get killed in another freeze or it getting hacked.
A reporter would follow up - Then what is our greatest threat that we should focus on; Securing the power grid and national security, or climate change?

And yes, sometimes you need certain foreign government’s approval and a couple of months of investigation (if you have certain “resources.”) you (generic) can physically locate the perps.
