Copenhagen (AFP) - Denmark already has one of Europe's harshest stances on immigration, but the wealthy Scandinavian country is set to adopt legislation on Thursday enabling it to open asylum centres outside Europe where applicants would be sent to live.
The latest move by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen's Social Democratic anti-immigration government is aimed at deterring migrants from coming to Denmark at all.
In practice, asylum seekers would have to submit an application in person at the Danish border and then be flown to an asylum centre outside Europe while their application is being processed.
The proposal is expected to sail through parliament on Thursday, supported by a majority including the far-right, despite opposition from some left-wing parties.
Denmark normally has a reputation for being one of the happiest countries in the world.
But it has repeatedly made headlines in recent years with its anti-immigration policies, including its official "zero refugees" target, its withdrawal of residence permits from Syrians now that it considers parts of the wartorn country safe, and its crackdown on Danish "ghettos" in a bid to reduce the number of "non-Western" residents.

Denmark has always marched to the beat of its own drummer relative to Norway and Sweden in particular.
Another key difference in national pride. Danes have it, Norway and Sweden don’t, or at least not to the same degree. I think this goes some way towards explaining why Denmark has adopted incredibly Draconian immigration laws (and make no mistake, they are TOUGH) whereas Norway and Sweden have not. I’m not sure about Finland but the feeling I get is it’s closer to Denmark than it is to Sweden or Norway in this regard.
Some cultures are successful.
Some cultures are failures.
Some cultures are pure evil.
Denmark recognizes this reality and is protecting its citizens from evil.
Send them into the Atlantic Ocean.
Greenland would make a nice holding area for immigrants that want to enter Denmark. It might even change their minds, and make them want to go back from where they came.
Racists. They probably require voter ID, too.

But, this hasn't happened in Denmark. It's been my experience (I've had the opportunity to travel extensively through Northern Europe for business) that Danes have a much greater sense national pride and this is most obviously reflected in their collective revulsion of losing their identity as Danes. Swedes and Norwegians very much see themselves as citizens of the world. That exists to some degree in Denmark, but the see themselves as Danes first in a big way.
Honestly watching that clip I can’t imagine how naïve that girl is; she’s also very lucky...
