Concerns about increased violence and crime continue to fuel a surge in gun purchases and background checks.
The FBI set a record for May in background checks. The bureau's latest data suggests 2021 will be another record year for background checks and sales, topping the nearly 40 million checks last year, the Washington Examiner reported Wednesday.
A total of 3.22 million background checks were performed in May, according to Forbes. That number was down 8% from 3.51 million in April but up 4% from 3.09 million in May 2020.
Inventory of firearms is low and the availability of ammunition is scarce due to the demand for weapons.
"Today our clients are buying anything that is not nailed down, and if it is nailed down some are bringing pry bars," said Clay Ausley, who co-owns Fuquay Gun & Gold in Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina. "We are selling whatever we can get in stock and pretty much as quickly as it comes in, it typically goes right back out."
Background checks and gun purchases are not a 1-to-1 match because checks also are conducted for security clearances and concealed carry permits in some cases.
But the record pace indicates the growing popularity of weapons. The Examiner reported gun stores and industry officials said the increase in buying weapons has been driven by minorities and women, especially in urban areas, concerned about their safety.
The current year is on pace to double the number of background checks and sales of just six years ago, when 23 million checks were conducted.
Although Democrats and the mainstream media promote gun control and blame the murder rate on weapons, statistics show a large percentage of the population has not been convinced.
Polls also show that many Americans are against the anti-gun efforts of President Joe Biden.

It is the ammo I have issues with. Just enough arms to cover things, but need to feed them.
Have an unrealized gain of approx. 100% on my Smith & Wesson stock after about a year. Thank you, BLM, Antifa and Democrats! You’ve been berry, berry good to me. LOL.
I approve of anything that causes shitlibs to wet themselves.
At my local gun store, they had a photo of Obama and it said, “Salesman Of The Month”.
The price is still high but supply is catching back up. It’s mostly online, though. Retail shops don’t seem to be able to keep up.
Ok,it wasn’t all my buying, really!
Once politicians publicly called on the police to abandon whole areas to leftist mobs, normals were going to see to it that they weren’t reliant on police to protect their lives (not just property). Once the cops “stood down”, there really was no reason not to de-fund them; they were no longer working for the “makers” that paid their salaries.
Aren’t Obama and Biden, the greatest gun salesman, we ever had?
First, many gun and ammo manufacturers that were in danger of going out of business (which would have hurt us) are now enjoying more business than they can handle.
Second, 1 in 5 new gun sales are from first time gun buyers which, hopefully, means new advocates of the Second Amendment.
Third, RINO and RAT KongressKreeps are paying attention. They're not likely to feel so comfortable unilaterally passing anti Constitutional gun laws.
Don't forget the members of the Church of the Most Holy George Floyd. They talked me into upgrading my personal arsenal.
Yes, them skanks too. 👎
But on the plus side, both guns and ammo seem to be staying on the shelves a bit more around here recently, so the major crunch might be subsiding. East Texas.
I went to the local Academy last week, was able to snag some CCI 22mag rounds, a bit more expensive than a year ago but not outrageous. $17 plus tax for 50. It was $12 before prices went up. I’ve seen it over $20 for a 50 round box. I also saw 20 rounds 9mm for 20 bucks a few weeks ago. Not good...I didn’t get any. Last box of 9mm I got was $18 plus tax. Somebody else set it down before he got to the register, I grabbed it.
Checked a couple days later, they had about 30 boxes or so each .223 and 5.56, I was looking around at fishing stuff. Around 45 minutes later it looked like no more than about a half dozen boxes had been sold. 3 months ago that much stock in those calibers would not have lasted 20 minutes.
I’ve gone in the same store an hour after they opened and found the shelves totally bare except for a few boxes of oddball calibers nobody uses much.. For almost a year they didn’t even bother to put ammo on the shelf, they would leave it on a pallet in the middle of the main aisle. In a half hour the only thing left would be oddball calibers that don’t sell a lot to begin with, and even those are long gone now.
28 gauge shotguns started selling like hotcakes a year ago when people found out they could find ammo for them and nothing else. Salesman at a local pawn shop said all of a sudden they couldn’t keep a 28 gauge gun, people were grabbing them up because 28 gauge shells were the only thing on the shelf, other than a few boxes of 12 and 20 gauge #8 shot...and very few...can’’t find buckshot for anything right now. Zero buckshot.
Some Winchester 22LR showed up 2 weeks ago, I got a box of 100, needed some more. Next day one box was still there, only a half dozen boxes in stock when I grabbed one. 6 months ago 20 - 30 boxes would be gone in 10 or 15 minutes.
Both Academy and a local pawn shop that sells as many guns as Academy seem to have more guns in stock these days than any time the past year. They still sell pretty fast, but I’m not seeing half empty shelves every single time any more. 6 months ago both stores put together didn’t have 20 handguns total at one point, on the same day.
For at least 6 months I saw no pump shotguns at all, Academy had one on the rack one day, it didnt last the day I found out later. Last Friday they had a half dozen or so pump guns. Same for the pawn shop. They actually stay on the rack for a day or two now.
Wal Mart has nothing, two large caliber hunting rifles, nothing else in their gun rack at all for a month or so, and for some reason those 2 have stayed on the shelf at least 2 weeks. They did get some 22 rounds and a few rifle rounds that didn’t stay long a week or 2 ago. I don’t buy ammo there, they hassle me about showing an ID or giving them a birthday. Screw you I’ll get it somewhere else. I passed up 22LR rounds there when they had it, about $1.29 less than what I paid elsewhere. CCI too, that sucked...but I refuse to play their game.
So...it looks like it’s slowing down some, guns and ammo both still flying off the shelves, but I don’t think it’s quite as bad as it was for the past year. When 30 - 40 boxes of .223 don’t disappear in a half hour, it’s getting better.
Two Suspected Arsonists Target Walmart Stores Just 24 Hours Apart
Absolutely!
This country has been chipping away at police officers for decades now. Slowly removing their powers to act in any situation....which simply transfers that to the criminals. THEY know the laws.
The whole idea of police forces has morphed so much over the history of this country that they’re often just seen as revenue sources now. Originally sheriffs were assigned to ensure the suspected perps at least got a fair trial (populations policed themselves)...
