Miami Police Chief Art Acevedo reacted to Sunday’s targeted attack on rapper ABMG Spitta’s album release party by calling for universal background checks.
Breitbart News reported that two people were killed and over 20 injured when three individuals got out of a Nissan Pathfinder and opened fire on a crowd outside a Miami banquet hall Sunday morning. The incident occurred around 12:3o a.m.
Acevedo told CBS’s Face the Nation, “It’s just an indication of the problem we have with the scourge of gun violence in this country, that we have to do much more at the federal level to stop.”
He later added, “We need to have universal background checks. We need to make burglarizing these licensed gun stores a federal crime with mandatory sentencing. We need the federal government and both sides to address these issues.”
Acevedo did not point out that California has had universal background checks since the early 1990s, yet they regularly have high profile, firearm-based attacks in their state.

The answer is both with one caveat -
Law abiding citizens should have one guns.
Once again. “IT’S NOT THE GUN THAT KILLS, PEOPLE”
Doesn’t surprise me that this fellow is making these sorts of comments. I recall reading about how when Florida readied to pass it’s concealed carry permit legislation in 1987 that apparently one police chief said he would arm his officers with machine guns if that law were to be enacted.
And those that are not law abiding should be in prison. That would remove all this nonsense about background checks.
Lost me right there.
UBC are first, not "universal" because (big surprise) criminals break laws, including background checks.
Second, these are an infringement, period. Worse, they are often used as an excuse, a stepping-stone to even more onerous infringements.
Third, they are ineffective. So-called "research" on their effectiveness is at best mixed, with some "researchers" claiming they work (apparently based on hopes and dreams) and others looking at the cold hard data and showing they are not effective.
If push comes to shove, I will choose to protect myself over trusting the police to protect me.
The police chief poses a false dichotomy question trying to get more gun prohibitions which will be ignored by the favored criminal class.
The average response time for police is 12 minutes. The average response time for a .357 Magnum is 12.5 milliseconds.
Re: false dichotomy
It’s amazing how often either/or is posited, when both/and is the correct answer.
Acevedo has been an ignorant a-ole for a long time, look at his last job... they were overjoyed to get rid of him!
Not surprising for a Communist from Cuba.
Assevedo. Gadfly schmuck.
Acevedo is a PURE LIBERAL who brought great harm to the Austin Police Department in many ways but one was that he led the fight for officers to physically hold down anyone who refused to give a blood sample following a DUI arrest. This “policy” was highly disliked by the general public even though it has been upheld in liberal appeals courts. I don’t know the 2021 status of the policy. I moved out of Austin.
He’s just a political hack. He deserves neither respect nor attention.
It’s just an opinion.
Why not arm everyone and support police?
This has worked in the worst areas in history.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.... Acevedo has been a strident anti-gunner since forever. I used to hear him rant out back in the early ‘90’s.
I carry a gun because I can’t carry a cop. I love how the elite want to outlaw guns when they maintain private security who have weapons.
So if someone robs a gun store in Miami they don't get jail time? WOW!
