That shop was Repair Revolution, founded in Seattle in 2012 by mechanic Eli Allison. In an industry that both Allison and Scherker characterize as rife with toxic masculinity and homophobia, Allison hopes Repair Revolution is an oasis — a place where any type of person, queer or not, can take their car sans judgment. The space itself has an open layout to invite folks in, and as far as the staff is concerned, every single mechanic who works there is either female, queer or both. For Scherker, it was a godsend, and the reason they’re still in the industry today.
Scherker’s experience in the auto industry as a trans person is not unique. In their experience, on both sides of the counter, folks who are visibly queer or don’t otherwise conform to traditional gender roles aren’t always welcome.
“I was told, if you want to be successful, just put your head down, do well,” Allison, who uses gender-neutral pronouns, said of their early days in the industry. “You have to work twice as hard. I used a female name and pronouns at the time, and it was as if I represented all women and queer people to them, so I had to prove that women can do this work. It was like, if you want to do this, you have to be OK with dudes sexually harassing you in the tool room — just really insane stuff. And every person that I've interviewed for a technician position that is either female or queer has had just horrible stories of what they endured in order to make it in this profession.”

My career has been a long one. At no point have I discussed my sex life at work. Why should I? I could be anything — any variety of perversion. My co-workers would have no idea. Because I don’t bring it up.
These queers make a big deal about it. They throw it in everyone’s face. Endlessly. And if you don’t support them 100% then they feel empowered to attack you. Because, you know, your hatred. And stuff.
It used to be considered a mental illness. It was. And it is. But, officially, you’re supposed to ignore how messed up they are.

There’s a gay guy where I work. We get along well and used to work closely together on some projects.
He’s only made one allusion to his preferences. So rare. The vast majority stuff it in your face and make like you need to champion their perversions.

They give their order, and the cashier politely asks:
“Will there be anything more SIR?”
Do they freak out? Do they use that moment to lecture the cashier about pronouns? “Sir, this is a Wendy’s Please keep the line moving!” The customer responds “I need to talk to the Manager!!!”

My theory.....Women are in general quite comfortable with male queers primarily because they are totally at ease and intimidated by their presence as they often can be with straight males. For them it's much like being with just another one of the girls.
Self-Imposed “Victimization”!
My Motorcycle Mechanic in Florida was a heterosexual woman, and was beloved by all her Biker Clients who knew a good mechanic when they saw one.
“Gender” had nothing to do with it.
After moving to MA and finding a new mechanic for my antique Harley, I was asked if I knew her. Her “fame” had spread to Boston MA all the way from Florida.
