"...Why scientists are concerned about leaks at biolabs..."

MAYBE THEY ARE CONCERNED THAT MESSING AROUND WITH VIRUSES AND GENETIC MATERIAL THAT MIGHT MAKE ITS WAY INTO THE WORLD AND DESTROY IT. COULD THAT BE IT? REALLY?

With apologies to Frank ...

Questions, questions, questions, flooding into the mind of the concerned young scientist today.

n 2014 the US government announced a pause in federal funding for such work, which gave way in 2017 to a framework that would consider each application on a case-by-case basis.

IIRC, 2017 is the year when Fauci started to say specifically that Trump was DEFINITELY going to face a pandemic.

All bolded red caps aside, I am of course concerned about Western countries doing this.

But I don’t believe Chinese culture (and definitely not any COMMUNIST Chinese culture) has enough cultural and societal safeguards built in to keep anything like that safe at any level for any length of time, and that makes me nearly crazy with concern.

Not to mention India, Pakistan, Iran...

Long ago in the Chronicle of Higher Education (1998 or so) they had an article about grad students who hated working in a medical lab. One said he was walking past a row of monkeys and one shot his arm through the cage and slashed at his arm with his nails. Made him bleed and he got sick.
The student soon had a high fever and other symptoms and was in the hospital. That kind of thing is much worse with dangerous bioweapons.

“These are built to work safely and securely with the most dangerous bacteria and viruses that can cause serious diseases for which there are no known treatment or vaccines.”

Where do these dangerous bacteria and viruses originate from? Oh....I feel so safe knowing our enemies are keeping these things secure.

except the China most labs that were/are working on corona virus types are bsl 2 and bsl 3, who outside of the china military knows what was going on in the bsl 4 lab ?

China may be able to prove that this virus did not come from the Bsl 4 lab cause it may not have.
The magic of misdirection

Anyone with a room temperature IQ is worried about leaks from a biolab.

the issue is the BIOWEAPON.

there was no “leak”. there has been TREASON.

this is no accidental dropping of a glass.

there has been WAR launched.

From Nicholas Wade's superb article, "The origin of COVID: Did people or nature open Pandora’s box at Wuhan?"

https://thebulletin.org/2021/05/the-origin-of-covid-did-people-or-nature-open-pandoras-box-at-wuhan/

...A second reason for the severe danger of novel coronaviruses has to do with the required levels of lab safety. There are four degrees of safety, designated BSL1 to BSL4, with BSL4 being the most restrictive and designed for deadly pathogens like the Ebola virus.

The Wuhan Institute of Virology had a new BSL4 lab, but its state of readiness considerably alarmed the State Department inspectors who visited it from the Beijing embassy in 2018. “The new lab has a serious shortage of appropriately trained technicians and investigators needed to safely operate this high-containment laboratory,” the inspectors wrote in a cable of January 19, 2018.

The real problem, however, was not the unsafe state of the Wuhan BSL4 lab but the fact that virologists worldwide don’t like working in BSL4 conditions. You have to wear a space suit, do operations in closed cabinets, and accept that everything will take twice as long. So the rules assigning each kind of virus to a given safety level were laxer than some might think was prudent.

I added the boldface. So much for "BSL4."

The only pictures I have seen that were purportedly of the Wuhan lab we're definitely not Level 4 and probably not Level 3. Think of an undergrad microbiology lab as Level 1. One step above would be a typical graduate student lab at maybe Level 2.

I constructed a microbiology lab once that was about Level 2 plus. Damn expensive. 12ft x 12ft room. Dedicated HVAC isolated from rest of the building, negative pressure relative to the adjacent large lab room, whole room HEPA air filter hanging on the ceiling ran 24/7, glove box with HEPA filter on the exhaust that vented to outdoors, UV light to sterilize glove box interior after use, Formica counter tops and back splashes, incubator, Zeiss research grade microscope, refrigerator, etc.

Lab was kept spotless via constant pro grade surface disinfectant use. Any trash, glassware or tools leaving that room went directly into a steam autoclave for sterilization.

I didn't intentionally work with pathogens but the nature of the work was such that I or my tech could incidentally isolate some and be exposed. This was risk mitigation. Frankly, with a little tweaking, I likely could have passed the lab to an inspected Level 3 rating.

I seem to recall reports from lasta year that the Wuhan lab was sloppy and had been cited as such previously.

from the article you posted, just a few paragraphs down...

Before 2020, the rules followed by virologists in China and elsewhere required that experiments with the SARS1 and MERS viruses be conducted in BSL3 conditions.

But all other bat coronaviruses could be studied in BSL2, the next level down. BSL2 requires taking fairly minimal safety precautions, such as wearing lab coats and gloves, not sucking up liquids in a pipette, and putting up biohazard warning signs.

Yet a gain-of-function experiment conducted in BSL2 might produce an agent more infectious than either SARS1 or MERS. And if it did, then lab workers would stand a high chance of infection, especially if unvaccinated.

Thanks. I considered posting that too.

This is where Anthony Fauci chose to invest U.S. taxpayer dollars for virology research.

Maybe the way above ground nuke testing was banned because it was a bad idea to send radioactive particles into the atmosphere, we should have a world ban on gain-of-function research. It’s an accident waiting to happen.
