I was a senior operational test analyst on this system for over 10 years. (Retired). Would you believe me if I told you that using Aegis as a missile defense platform was the idea of none other than Jeff “Skunk” Baxter, former guitarist for Steely Dan and the Doobie Brothers? Think I’m kidding? Do a YouTube search for “Jeff Baxter Missile Defense”. Not sure if he still is, but he was a high-level advisor to the Pentagon on missile defense, mainly because of his out of the box thinking.
But they wouldn’t tell us.
Comment on the warzone speculates that the incoming ballistic missile might have been using evasion techniques implying the interceptor wasn’t expected to hit it (but gives good info on the success of those techniques).

I can’t answer that. All I know is that it is all over the mainstream media, I also heard it on the radio.
Maybe it was fake fail,,,and the Russians-Chicoms collected bad data.
Reading between the lines I would speculate that the test was not actually on the defense capabilities, but the effectiveness of a new hyper-sonic missile. If so it was a success. :)

The only reasonably successful missile defense is preemption.
Let’s hope that’s where Pentagon money is going. Certainly it appears to be focused toward a new generation of weapons and thinking.
There’s no defense like an unstoppable offense. In fact it’s better if your defense never has to take the field.

Everything that the military puts out should be taken with a grain of salt whether good or bad. They constantly put out disinformation to keep our enemies in the dark and there is lots of money to be made when something new is needed.
