Happy summer? Rain, unseasonably cold temps to greet Northeast for holiday weekend
Accuweather ^ | May 29th, 2021 | By Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist

Posted on 05/29/2021 5:24:34 PM PDT by Mariner

The unofficial start to summer is here, but for tens of millions of Americans across the Midwest, mid-Atlantic and Northeast, it sure isn’t going to feel much like summer.

AccuWeather forecasters have been warning of a dreary start to the holiday all week, and the outlook is still rather bleak for those with plans to barbecue or hit the beach this weekend. Those traveling --AAA predicted 60% more travelers this year compared to last -- will have inclement conditions to navigate.

In the Northeast, daily high temperatures Saturday could be as much as 20 degrees below normal and even challenge records in places. Add to that a soaking rainfall and the recipe for a holiday weekend spoiler is complete. However, there is some hope that by Monday the pattern will brighten and temperatures will moderate a bit for some places.

The culprit has been a slow-moving storm making its way across the nation this week. As the storm moved along, rain advanced eastward and soaked areas up to a few hundred miles north and south of I-80 in the Midwest and into the Northeast through Friday night.

I guess you get used to the weather anywhere.

But it was 90deg here in the Big Valley today, with 18% humidity. It will be 105 on Memorial day.

I have already picked some Jalapeno and Serrano peppers, radishes, basil and cherry tomatoes. Green beans by Monday.

But we could sure use a bunch of that rain everyone else is tired of.

Same here in Mesa, AZ. We’re having a 101 Memorial Day.

Hot while the sun was out until the clouds moved in. Are we doomed?

If you can’t get your garden in by May 15th, how do you grow summer vegetables?

It’s 43 degrees here in the northeast with steady rain. First time I’ve ever turned the heat on this late in the spring.

Trump's fault. Pierre Delecto demands a Congressional investigation.

I do remember a year back around 2012 when it was even cooler than this. Parts of northern New Jersey had below-freezing temperatures overnight on May 31st to June 1st ... the first time on record when there was frost in June in that state.

Nice in my Fla AO but way too dry. The good news is that the humidity is way below normal in the afternoon, around 30 percent, which keeps the heat index down and allows the nights to dip below 70.

No mid or upper 90s with heat indexes of 105 plus. Daytime highs barely hit 90 which is nice for this time of the year.

Atlantic water temp is too cold for swimming though. Only 75. Best time for water temps is in September when it is around 85. The Gulf can have water temps in SW Fla of 90 which is a bit warm for me.

When we left Maryland yesterday it was about 75 degrees. By the time we got to western Michigan, it was about 40.
