Georgia Governor Kemp Bans Public School Mask Mandates
Townhall ^ | May 27, 2021 | Reagan McCarthy

Posted on 05/27/2021 2:52:21 PM PDT by george76

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp (R-GA) is the latest Republican governor to follow the science with mask mandates. After banning state-mandated vaccine passports in his state, the Georgia Republican announced that he would prohibit public schools from mandating that students, teachers, and staff wear masks.

“We’re not going to have a mask mandate for our kids. Our teachers have had the ability to get vaccinated. It certainly doesn’t keep anyone from wearing a mask. If parents want their kids to wear a mask, if teachers want to wear a mask if they haven’t been vaccinated, or even if they have, they can certainly do that. ” Kemp said on Fox News. “The time for mandates is over. Our numbers have plummeted.”

He emphasized that his constituents know how to utilize best practices for the pandemic, and that Georgians are encouraged to receive the COVID vaccine. Kemp and other Republican governors have been on the receiving end of criticism from the Left and Democrat politicians for liberating their states from burdensome regulations, as the vaccination rate continues to climb. Republican governors, including Kemp, have refused to allow government-mandated vaccination passports for citizens to return to normal life, while blue state governors keep their states in pandemic-mode while businesses continue to suffer. With respect to mask mandates, the guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is on the side of GOP governors who have banned mandates for vaccinated individuals; the guidance indicates that fully vaccinated Americans need not wear masks any longer.

School year is basically over. This is a virtue signal ban. No way will we have masks or coronavirus in the Fall.

Most people in the Atlanta metro area are still wearing masks. I hope that ends this weekend.

Gov. Gump is both dumb and stupid. The school year ended yesterday. People in the ‘burbs’ have long stopped wearing a mask.

IIRC last year Governor Kemp was one of the first to ease up restrictions in his state and was publicly criticized by Trump. Do I have recall this incorrectly?

Kemp’s office released a statement explaining that mask requirements from Georgia localities are legally “unenforceable.”... mask-wearing should be up to the choice of each individual.

Yes. I live in GA. We were FL and TX 6 months ahead of them. Trump threw Kemp totally under the bus for opening up so much. Been going to the gym, breweries, and restaurants since the end of April last year. Almost never wore masks anywhere here. Kemp gets no credit for the courage it took to have one of the largest states get back to business.

I’ll never understand why Trump did that...he publicly attacked Kemp not once but twice for opening up his state.

And Kemp then had the same problem Florida and Texas had...the liberal cities simply did their own “mandates,” because for some reason masks and shutdowns immediately became part of the liberal creed. I was touring around Georgia last week and I was stunned to see how many people in Macon and Augusta were still running around with masks, and it was pretty much universally required indoors. I went up to North Georgia and while the locals weren’t doing the mask thing, the tourists from Atlanta were still wearing them and the Ingles market was requiring them (although mot enforcing it if, like me, you weren’t wearing one).

Very weird. DeSantis here in Florida, where I live, has had to issue order after order invalidating the rules and fines imposed by the liberal cities. The teachers’ union hates him and he is having to order them to open the public schools in person in the fall. So people here who are criticizing Kemp for this order, saying he’s just doing it for effect, don’t seem to realize what the good governors are up against.

Also, of course, the odious Fauci is saying that children should wear masks, so Kemp has to do a preemptive strike before the school year gets going again. I hope DeSantis does the same.

Well, the American Academy of Pediatrics just called for kids ages TWO to ELEVEN to remain masked unless and until they get the vaccine. So I am not sure this is an empty gesture.

If they start pulling the wear a mask crap in the fall, He can always issue a new order.

However, if the courts said no, or the legislature passed a law limiting his powers that would be a hard limit.

Don’t you bet on it. I am betting there will be further lock downs as they hype up new variants in certain states and cities run by Democrats.

Dems don’t want lock downs for the midterms. Biden is going to claim he solved the problem.

I never had a problem in metro Atlanta not wearing one. Even though many people did wear them, Kemp provided such important support not wearing them with no mandate and for businesses to stay open. I will always give him praise for that. The whole world was against GA for a few months.

Trump is perhaps the greatest president of my lifetime in his policies. One of his flaws, however, is publicly insulting and castigating people with whom he was going to have to work a later date. In the private sector he could fire people at will and probably did so until he had an entire enormous team of people who liked working for him. That is not how it is in the public sector.
