It's becoming more likely that a key global temperature limit will be reached in one of the next five years.
A major study says by 2025 there's a 40% chance of at least one year being 1.5C hotter than the pre-industrial level.
That's the lower of two temperature limits set by the Paris Agreement on climate change.
The conclusion comes in a report published by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
The analysis is based on modelling by the UK Met Office and climate researchers in 10 countries including the US and China.
Leon Hermanson, a senior Met Office scientist, told BBC News that comparing projected temperatures with those of 1850-1900 shows a clear rise.
"What it means is that we're approaching 1.5C - we're not there yet but we're getting close," he said.
"Time is running out for the strong action which we need now."
At the moment, projections suggest that even with recent pledges to cut emissions of greenhouse gases, the world is on course to heat up by up to 3C.
The WMO's secretary-general, Prof Petteri Taalas, said the results of the new research were "more than mere statistics".
"This study shows - with a high level of scientific skill - that we are getting measurably and inexorably closer to the lower target of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change," he explained.
"It is yet another wake up call that the world needs to fast-track commitments to slash greenhouse gas emissions and achieve carbon neutrality."

Darn, I thought we had ten years left.
Made up nonsense, great spring here in Virginia.
And we’re having a fairly average or even slightly cooler spring up here in my parts.
Warmer than The Little Ice Age? I should be scared?
Quick..!! We must beg lord Gates to “dim the sun”, or we are all going to die... Ahhhhhhhhh...!!!!
We’re just lucky we didn’t evolve 15,000 years earlier. Can you imagine the magnitude of the job of keeping that glacier in Dayton, Ohio.
We had ten years in 1996...
How many Floridians head to Canada vs Canadians heading to Florida in December, January, February and March?
Gee, I wonder why?
“A major study says by 2025 there’s a 40% chance of at least one year being 1.5C hotter than the pre-industrial level.”
Pre-industrially, what was the likelihood that a given year was 1.5C higher than normal? Pre-industrially what was that “normal” level? This statement implies that it was a fixed temperature, for eons. What was it, in degrees Celsius?
In any case, a “major study” says this. So how can we doubt it?
So, which “tipping point” iteration is this? Six, eight, ten? They have been telling us the sky is falling, crying wolf, etc. for a couple of decades now. Apparently we are already well past the point of no return - several times over. Therefore I’d say there’s no point. After all, we’ve been assured, many times now, the science is settled and apparently we’ve missed all the deadlines we were assured were literal deadlines. So either this is all for naught now, or they were lying or mistaken before. In that case, why would we believe them now?
Yeah but the UFO hysteria will kill everybody before then, so no problem.
“based on modeling by the UK Met Office...”
Say no more.
Oh noes! The "temperature limit"!!!!
Why don’t they just pass a resolution forbidding the globe to warm?
Well you see, the heating up is causing the cooling down, is all “settled science” dontcha know. (S).
That’s the lower of two temperature limits set by the Paris Agreement on climate change.
Yeah science.
The beauty of Nature’s design:
Oxygen is the breath of life to the animal kingdom, and carbon dioxide is given off by the plant kingdom.
And carbon dioxide is the breath of life for the plant kingdom, and oxygen is given off by that kingdom.
The carbon dioxide being given off by combustion of hydrocarbons is simply from the carbon stored in ancient plant material from which the hydrocarbons are produced.
It is well known that the increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide enhances plant growth, which in turn reduces atmospheric carbon dioxide.
In summary, there is no carbon dioxide problem. A little warming of the planet has never-talked-about benefits as well as the well the publicized alleged drawbacks.
The idiot never looked at a global historical temperature chart. The planet is now passing the normal line and will quickly head into an ice age.
