The United States should greatly boost the amount of COVID-19 vaccine it sends to vulnerable countries, says Sen. Mitt Romney, and it should send those doses as soon as it can.
In a letter Thursday to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the Utah Republican argues such vaccine diplomacy would not only “increase the resiliency of our neighbors, allies and partners,” but it also would counteract pushes by China and Russia, which are sharing their own less-effective vaccines.
“I was dismayed to learn that while China and Russia are pushing out vaccines to countries in desperate need, the U.S. is still in the stage of planning and prioritizing,” Romney states, “and has yet to communicate in any detail to countries around the world when they can expect doses.”
The Biden administration recently announced that it would provide an additional 20 million doses to other countries by the end of June. That would increase the vaccines the U.S. would send elsewhere to 80 million doses. This comes as the shots are relatively easy to get in the United States and available to everyone age 12 and older.
Romney calls the 80 million doses “far too few to effectively stymie the pandemic and prevent new variants from reaching our shores.”
The senator also highlights the potential diplomatic effect, noting China is offering vaccines to Honduras in exchange for that Central American country breaking ties with Taiwan. If that happens, Romney adds, “the U.S. will have failed in its own strategic objectives regarding Taiwan...

Willard probably has a stake in this endeavor.
Well, anyone who doesn’t like the vaccination thing could support this. The more of this stuff leaves the US, the less there is to hassle people with in the US.
And the US vaccination campaign has probably gone as far as it needs to anyway, between that 50% of the population getting it, including 85% of those over 65, and all those besides who have already had Covid, the US should be in an effective state of herd immunity by now.
Everyone both pro and anti vax should be fine with shipping it all off to Honduras or Africa or even Japan.
Yes, probably owns stock somewhere.
Goodness… we hear from the Peanut Gallery once again.
Well... Let’s just ship him with right along with it!
If there were a betting line in Vegas, I’d bet every penny I have no matter the odds. He is a selfish grifter hiding behind a religion. He is “PREDICTABLE”!
It would NOT be ANY loss to us if we did!
Because he’s a card carrying moron.
How many towns in Africa can store vax at -40deg?
His forte is to have his hair in place and to sound like he knows what he's talking about.
Unfortunately, he only gets half of that formula correct. The hair part.
Can anyone name one thing Romney has done in the Senate that has helped the American people?
He saw an opportunity to step into McCain's role as the GOP Back Stabber in Chief and he's good at that.
He's a talker, not a doer.
Why?
He is hoping that one of those countries would be so grateful they would appoint him as “Fearless Leader”, since there is no way that item will be checked off of his bucket list in this country.
Well, Mittens, get out your checkbook and write a big one if you’re unhappy about vaccine distribution…
Screw Mittens.
I do not much mind the Western Hemisphere do much (Monroe Doctrine and all)
But MOST of the vaccines won’t be going there…
Why? So they’ll like us. /S
No brainer.
Sen Romneycare (UTAH, offworld) and his BAIN
