During the May 26, 2021, Senate Judiciary Confirmation hearings, Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and ATF nominee David Chipman were in solidarity in push for “electronic traces” of firearms.
Leahy jumped into the topic by complaining about laws that limit the tracing and tracking of firearms, saying, “Congress, at the behest of some in the gun lobby, prohibited the ATF from electronically searching gun sales records [even though] we have tens of millions of these records stored in metal containers in parking lots.”

Oh good!
I thought they were looking at forums for people talking about guns lost in boating accidents.
Odd, him being from the state that for all of those years had almost no gun control and almost no violent crime (yes, I know all of this is not about the crime).
I think I should have electronic access to their banking accounts. Just in case something looks suspicious. My justification is just as good as theirs.
How can they have ‘millions of those records stored in metal containers’?
I thought they were supposed to be destroyed after 30 days by Federal Law?
I was thinking the same thing. Did he just admit that the ATF is violating federal law? Of course they know that the Biden DOJ will never prosecute anything that furthers fascism in America, so why should they care about revealing this.
Solitary sounds like a fitting placement for Senator Depends Leahy.

Since they have yet to place his rotting corpse in the Capitol Rotunda for a month, it can be assumed that he is still stealing air.
we need electronic traces of ballots indicating the human that placed each and every vote.
You’re thinking of background check records, those are supposed to be deleted (not that I believe them), Leahy is talking about the form 4473 that actually has the serial number information which are held by the dealer for 10 years or until the FFL closes shop, at which time they are sent to the ATF.
They do have millions of records in containers, they are not supposed to assemble them into a registry (again, I don’t believe them) but not the most recent or complete records.
Thought he died just before the second impeachment
Nah. We’re not that lucky.

Sounds like firearm registration, not background checks.
Translation; universal gun registration
As much as I want that to be an actual quote by GW, it wasn’t. There are a dozen references of misattribution for this quote. I don’t disagree with the spirit of the quote, but he would’ve been much more elegant in its statement.
