Governor says legislation is needed to ensure election officials don't jeopardize Texas elections, make sure only those allowed to vote are voting.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott says local elections in Texas have been altered by voter fraud, though he admits there were no known cases in the state in 2020, and says he is taking steps to "ensure election integrity in Texas" through legislative action. Abbott says laws must be written to prevent election officials from jeopardizing the election process and to ensure poll watchers have access to observing ballot counts.
Abbott was joined by Texas Senator Paul Bettencourt (R-Houston, District 7) and Texas Representative Briscoe Cain (R-Deer Park, District 128) in Houston Monday morning to announce combatting election fraud as an emergency item this legislative session.
"Election fraud is unacceptable and that's exactly why I made it an emergency item this session," Abbott said Monday. "What we've seen in the past is that election fraud takes place. I have no doubt that it took place here in the state of Texas."
On Monday, the governor said when he was attorney general he prosecuted people across the state for allegations of election fraud. Abbott was last attorney general in 2015 but did say the state's current attorney general, Ken Paxton, has also prosecuted election fraud crimes.
Sen. Nathan Johnson (D-Dallas, District 16), representing the Senate Democratic Caucus, said during a news conference Monday afternoon that Paxton's office spent 22,000 staff hours investigating voter fraud during the 2020 presidential election and found only 16 minor offenses, where there were small infractions such as addresses not matching, out of the 11 million ballots cast.

Gov. Abbott: We must have trust in the outcome of our elections.
Texas is a state that has a long history of taking voting practices seriously.

BS, Texas is prosecuting a case against a woman who by her own estimate coerced or bought more than 5,000 ballots.
Rats cover up Rat crime.
Even the Democrat PRIMARY has Democrats alleging vote fraud!
Several years ago, the Texas AG busted a big voter fraud ring in the DFW area.
Here’s an unpopular idea, but really the only idea that can secure out elections: The only people that should be allowed to vote via mail-in/absentee ballots are uniformed service members or other employees of the US federal government who are deployed outside CONUS, or away from their home in some geographically meaningful way.
If you’re on vacation or living outside the US and you want to vote on Election Day, then get your behind home or STFU.
Everyone else votes in person after proving their identity and gets a purple thumb, or they don’t vote.
I bet the House would swing 40-seats and the Senate maybe as many as 6-seats over a 6-year period (with a third of the Senate seats being contested every two years).
Are Democrats banned from touching ballots ? LOL
The fraud must stop. Governor Abbott is totally behind Election Integrity.
Was that in a prior election?
Yes, and I am sure they are quietly examining Ft. Worth’s election. An X-Dominion employee has running the election from what I have read. First time Ft. Worth Ever turned Blue.
Wont sell, but it might work. smile.
No, but they must not be trusted with control of government.
That happened, I think, this last election.
Wonder why? Every republican claims the election was free and fair and Biden won. So what’s to reform?
Unless he’s talking about ensuring that every voting machine in TX is a dumb voting machine, I have 3 words for Abbott.
Talk is cheap.
Not to mention the Carrollton mayoral candidate who was busted for attempting mail-in ballot fraud.
There were about 30-days of early voting last time around. A purple thumb only works if all voting must be done in person on election day.

OK. You’ve talked me into it. All voting must be done in person on Election Day.
In a lot of states, we have longer periods of ‘early voting’ today than we had in a first few federal elections, even though people back then had to frequently travel dozens of miles (and sometimes much more) to vote and cover that ground on horseback or foot. In 2002 (the last year I could find this data) 90% of US voters lived within .64 of a mile of their polling location. No one needs four weeks to travel .64 of a mile, not even Steven Hawking.
Texas is one of the few states that turned down Dominion voter machines.
Last year my employer permitted us to take a (new) paid day off to go vote on election day.
