They've Had It! Why 260 Cops Have Fled Seattle
Townhall ^ | 05/25/2021 | Matt Vespa

There hasn’t been a police department more brutalized in recent memory. In Seattle, cops have been pummeled by a psycho city council. It’s not shocking. Seattle is left-wing. The residents are left-wing. They’re all nuts. The mayor allowed armed leftists to seize portions of the city. The ‘summer of love’ came crashing down when—shocker—people started to get shot and killed inside the autonomous zone. They have hamstrung the police and spit in their faces. After a summer of riots and not being allowed to restore order, along with an overall anti-police atmosphere, are we shocked that scores of cops have fled Seattle? Around 20 percent of the police force has left (via CBS News):

The Seattle Police Department is struggling under the backlash of recent police reforms. The state of Washington has just enacted a dozen police reform laws, following nearly a year of protests over police brutality.

According to one social justice group, more than $840 million were cut from U.S. police budgets in 2020.

This has caused a shortage of police in Seattle. The police chief tells CBS News that 260 officers, which is almost 20 percent of the force, have left in the past year and a half.

Officer Clayton Powell has served nearly 27 years on the streets of Seattle. He said it was his goal to stay on the force for 30 years, but even though he is three years away from that goal, he's retiring early.

"The support that we had in my generation of policing is no longer there," Powell told CBS News' Carter Evans.

Last summer's protests over the killing of George Floyd led to violent clashes with Seattle police. Powell said the stress on officers was compounded by city leaders' decisions to abandon a police precinct and letting demonstrators, some armed, occupy an entire neighborhood for a whole month. As a result, Powell said he and other officers had rocks, bottles, and in some cases, cinder blocks thrown at them, and they had to "stand there and take it."

"When you see businesses get destroyed and families lose their livelihood because of that destruction and we can't do anything about it. We're not allowed to intercede," he said.

The city had a black female police chief, Carmen Best, and she couldn’t handle the nonsense. She left last year. Granted, not everything she said I agreed with, like calling 9-1-1 to report racist incidents, but she was committed to stopping mayhem in the streets. There were vans with weapons in them, folks. Best presented this and still, the council decided to side with the terrorists. I think what’s more ironic is that while the progressive Left is obsessed with diversity, they did everything they could to undermine the city’s first female black police chief. It’s not about Black Lives Matter. It’s about shredding law enforcement. It’s about declaring a left-wing activist war on cops. They started months ago, and the fallout is going to be more crime, more death, and more mayhem. It’s already happening. And if Democrats don't think this will be a 2022 issue, they didn't read their 2020 autopsies regarding this 'defund the police' nonsense. It caused scores of black and Hispanic voters to back Republicans.

Do people really need to be further informed on “Why 260 Cops Have Fled Seattle”?

My son lives a few blocks from Chad/Chop. I was visiting there just a month ago. It’s just like it has always been - insanity is the rule of the day.

This is a really, REALLY creepy part of Seattle, FWIW. But politically the whole city has gone nuts. BTW, I sold commercial real estate there back in the early 80’s.

Too bad Kurt and Adrienne aren’t available, and Isaac and Donald are dead for “Escape from Seattle”.

Who cares?

Let the remainder retire/quit too. Let them fend for themselves.

When talk of secession comes up, isn’t it always the Blue States and liberals that pronounce to the world that the Red States and Conservatives would wither away and die if it weren’t for the Democrats?

Let them reap what they’ve sown.

Biggest problem, as has been noted routinely on here is, the ones that can afford to move, move and then just ruin the next place. If there were a way to keep them all there and deal with the consequences of their ideology and votes, the world would be a better place.

Maybe Seattle should hire that cop from ‘The Village People’ to recruit new officers. That should make everyone involved happy.

They’re probably the 260 that you wanted to keep.

Lived there 2000 - 2008. Left due to a better job offer elsewhere. I lived in a wealthier, safe and sane, quiet part of town. Going downtown was something I dreaded. Homeless, druggies everywhere even then.

There is plenty of police work to be done in more receptive venues. In fact, it would be a résumé enhancement to say you had left the Seattle municipal police force, as that would indicate that the desire to perform well as a police officer was foremost in the goals and ambitions of an applicant.

Might even be the best kind of job to be fired from.

Probably not FReeper's...but 65-70% of "regular" folks do...

It's always amazing to me...how many people do not know what is going on in this world.

I work with cattle that know more about sheet...than people.

I object to the use of “fled.” I understand that in writing a title you must find the most active, descriptive verb possible to indicate the sentence’s action. But fled isn’t it. These cops left in disgust.

On the other hand, a wise manager once said to me, “If you want to change a bad policy, insist that everyone abide by it.” Or, as an economist once said, “the solution to high prices is high prices.” These are very similar concepts. Making the left live by their own policies is the surest way to create conservatives. The problem we have is, the left who make the policies do not have to live by them. They typically live in gated communities, send their kids to private school, and have their own security. However, the people who elect them live in average homes, are subject to crime and have their children lecturing them on their white privilege. Eventually, the great unwashed regular people will wise up and change their leadership. Wake me when Joe The Plumber is elected. Those will be some interesting times.!

I just turned away a job referral in the Seattle area today.
The reason I gave was that I would be assaulted for urinating on Vladimir Illych’s statue. Then arrested for counter revolutionary insurrection.

Our family visited Seattle back in 1989. It seems everyone I ran into or talked to were rude.

The first guy I ran into was a gas station attendant. I was asking directions to a camp ground I was having trouble finding. When I repeated back what he had told me so he could make sure I got the directions, he yelled at me and said, "I already told you." Talk about being emotionally tone-deaf.

The gal at the grocery checkout made NO eye contact with me the entire time. Kinda reminded me of New York rude.

When we drove through eastern Washington, the people were a lot like what I know in Texas. They were real nice.

I visited SF for the first time in almost 20 years. I was just a few blocks off Fisherman’s Wharf and saw needles in the gutters, human feces on the sidewalks, people passed out in doorways, and just general filth everywhere. I’ll never return.

Yes, it’s a reminder that 80% of Seattle cops are crazy enough to stay.

“It caused scores of black and Hispanic voters to back Republicans.”

I hope we get more than scores of black and Hispanic voters to back Republicans. “Scores” isn’t going to move the needle anywhere in the country.

I worked in south Seattle for over 20 years. I earned my University degree at a Private Seattle university. I tell you this, Seattle city cops were the worst cops in WA state perhaps even worse than Tacoma cops(kind of a toss-up).
It doesn’t surprise me that the few good cops they have(I’m being kind here) are bailing and leaving Seattle what it deserves. Schiff in the streets.
