Happy Whit Monday to my Commonwealth cousins throughout the Caribbean and the Pacific, and to our readers in much of Continental Europe. And of course to my fellow Canadians a happy if locked down Victoria Day. Enjoy it while you can.
Front page news from yesterday's New York Times:
World Is Facing First Long Slide in Its Population
Me in my international bestseller fifteen years ago:
The single most important fact about the early 21st century is the rapid aging of almost every developed nation other than the United States: Canada, Europe and Japan are getting old fast, older than any functioning society has ever been and faster than any has ever aged... These countries – or, more precisely, these people – are going out of business.
The Times front page yesterday:
All over the world, countries are confronting population stagnation and a fertility bust, a dizzying reversal unmatched in recorded history that will make first-birthday parties a rarer sight than funerals, and empty homes a common eyesore.

The West (Europe, Israel, Japan and USA) got rich and people stopped having expensive children.
The East (China) killed at least half of their babies and are wondering who will take care of them now that they are old.
The developing world (Mideast and Africa) put no controls on their sexual license or dangerous lifestyles, got every disease imaginable, and are now suffering the consequences of fetal and child death before age five.
However, the birth rates of most Christian groups are doing just fine and growing, but they don’t tell the government so nobody knows about them.
Anyone who has worked in group situations knows how hard it is to get groups to do anything. On a national level? On an international level? It’s basically theater because those people cannot actually do anything cohesive.
Meanwhile, behind the scenes, some people always understand the situation and want to get something done. At small scales, you can pretty “act now, ask forgiveness later”. That becomes a bit harder on national and international levels.
However, pandemics, either deliberate or not, can provide a pretext for action. Mind you: thoughtful, careful reaction to the pandemic is almost certainly not the goal. And the pandemic may not be the cause.
But the pandemic, and the over-reaction to the pandemic can be a nice pretext for taking bold action on certain topics. Which may include demographic crashes and fear of a strong US economy.
China plays rough. Look around. And they had partners.
Chi-Com-19 !
The designer virus that targets old people. Because old people can be such a burden on a shrinking young population.
Surely they’ll do better next time.
And Indians are boinking like rabbits and invading the rest of the world with their spawn …. Just like Muslims
Maybe, but they still need people to fill out the military and construction goals they have set for themselves.
And very few are taking Premier Xi up on the two child families. They all want their toys and lifestyle before having the obligatory child.
Your comment about India is true, but remember, they are Aryan.
The Muslims lose a lot of their next generation before they are five, and their average age of death is quite low already, thanks to the non-existent diseases (like AIDs) which so many of them die from.
Your comment about India is true, but remember, they are Aryan.

Very, very northern India - Kashmir perhaps. Not the rest of the country.
