A friend of mine used to say that the best words in the English language are “Ladies and gentlemen, we’ve begun our descent into JFK Airport.”
That friend lives in Florida now.
It didn’t help that all the news from Florida was that it was like a 2019 wonderland. People were sane! Masks were not worn in low-risk situations! Kids went to school every day!
The main reason we pulled the trigger on a complicated, albeit temporary, move, though, was for our youngest son. Learning on Zoom for a four-year old is not a possibility.
His Florida teacher understood that he was not at the level of his classmates who had been in school every day of the fall semester. Our son blossomed during his nearly five months there. Nothing could beat going to school every day. He had an exceptional teacher who worked with him and cared about his progress.
The school itself was very impressive. When my daughter advanced past her math lessons, she was given harder ones. My second-grader had to do a research report on a famous person in history (he chose Anne Frank). Second-graders in New York are not doing research reports.
That same son learned patriotic music in his music class and came home regaling us with stories about the War of 1812. The school had students wear camo for Armed Services Appreciation Day. They said the Pledge of Allegiance daily. These things would be scoffed at in the New York City school system, where educators tend to pretend we’re not part of a larger country.
But Covid-19 had exposed things about our city that we could not unsee. Now we have to decide if we’re able to let things go, or if it’s finally time to move on.

If you vote liberal, NYC is truly “your place.”
We visited a couple weeks ago and it was awesome to be facemask free.
is it costly there? I am looking to buy there too PM me if you like
NYC is my birthplace and was my home for a long time, in some important ways I will always be a New Yorker.
When I visit, I don’t feel like a tourist, or, worse, an “out of towner” (which is the worst insult a New Yorker can hurl).
But, it’s true, I can’t live there.
Like anything else, it depends on where you live in Florida. On the beach, expensive. Bigger towns more expensive than smaller towns. No state taxes though.
Plagues, crime, safety socialism, and liberty-hatred are diseases magnified by population density. It can happen to Florida, too. Move to some place like the Midwest where the climate wants to kill you two seasons out of four. Strong people can handle it, but it keeps the riffraff out.
Why did they put their child on a school bus?
Yankees, stay home!
Sounds like Floridians are as concerned as Texans, about libs moving to, and ruining, their great state.
That first comment sums it up, beautifully.
They left NY to escape the BS and now they are headed right back to it. #smh
Property taxes are embarrassingly low. I went from paying 7,200 a year in Maryland to 1,850 a year in central Florida. It’s 2,000 a year now but still. Cheap!!!!! Hope it stays that way. Things that are Higher costs than in Maryland: water (extremely expensive), Milk 1 or 2 dollars more expensive, Food in general (20 percent higher), Lots of tolls (all over Florida), roof replacements (first they don’t last long. 18 years if you are lucky. Roofs cost at least 18K to replace. Homeowner insurance is expensive and getting higher and higher. Auto insurance is higher as well as it’s a no fault state. Otherwise mostly cheaper then the north.
It is over the invasion will never stop....there will only be a couple of red states in five years....there are two invasions
Only hope is democrat working class switches parties...
Kinda funny that the more northerners come, the redder Florida becomes. No we do not wish to live the 1990’s when Florida was a deep blue state. You clearly forgot.
That IS kinda funny, nappy.
You should post that, at the comments (at article link).

Same thing is happening, here in TX.
Although....I WAS pleasantly surprised with some recent votes, coming out of LIB-City Austin.
Maybe there’s hope for some of these fleeing libs.
Good idea.
Why, in the name of all that’s Holy, would they bring their children back to that hell-hole???
The panhandle state has biting bugs, alligators big enough to swallow a Volkswagen, poisonous plants, Class V hurricanes every year, tornadoes that can rip the hide off a steer, humidity off the chart, lightening (capital of the world), sinkholes that can appear and devour an entire home while you sleep, snakes longer than a football field, speed traps, hovering UFOs, swamps all over where Big Foot lives, mass killers lurking in the woods, a “Florida Man” acting out on every street corner, a large prison system, paddling in the public schools, shrines to Tim Tebow, Title II (machine gun) friendly laws, pulpwood plantations, voter I.D. requirements, a state song written by Stephen Foster and an official Robert E. Lee state holiday.
Those are things anybody from up north ought to consider before getting in the truck and heading to those latitudes.
Freedom? Priceless!
