Rock Island Auction: Evolving the Art of Gun Auctions
AmmoLand ^ | 19 May, 2021 | Dean Weingarten

Rock Island Auction has quickly become one of the premier gun auction places on the Internet.

Rock Island Auction is separate from Rock Island Arsenal. It is a word association for marketing. There is no legal association. Both institutions are located in Rock Island, Illinois, but have no overlap. Rock Island Auction is also frequently confused with Rock Island Armory, also known as Armscor. Armscor is a firearm and ammunition manufacturer based in Nevada.

Rock Island Auction (RIA) had its first regional auction in February of 2003. It was a 600 gun auction. The auction was designed as an in-person auction and was held regionally so that it could serve the midwest.  RIA wanted people to come, to be at the auction in person.

RIA has since become a serious presence on the Internet.

They have grown into having six major auctions a year. There are three premier auctions of the best of the best. They distribute a color catalog of the premier auction, at considerable expense, with lovely images of the lots to be auctioned.  RIA has begun to make the catalogs available digitally.

There are three sporting and collector auctions, which contain items that may not be the “best of the best” but are often of excellent quality. A black and white catalog is distributed for the sporting and collector auctions.

Creating and printing the catalogs are a substantial cost to the operation. Those six auctions are done in person, online, and over the telephone.

Six other auctions are done in the remaining months. Catalogs are not printed for those auctions. These auctions are done online, not in person.  There are live bidders on the phone and by RIAC Live. Bidding is the same as other auctions, except for the lack of in-person bidding.

Not bad for targets at 100 yards...

Seriously, difficult to know that sort of problem until a firearm is actually fired.

You can get redress for factory new guns, but as long as it fires safely, I do not see any venue for redress for a used gun.

On the other hand...

Much depends on the person doing the shooting. I had many, many people claim the gun was "inaccurate". I would offer to diagnose it, if I could use their ammunition (this occurred frequently while I taught concealed carry courses).

Sometimes the gun was off.

But most of the time, the gun shot much better than the person shooting it was capable of.

The worst were small, light guns in powerful calibers, which induced terrible flinches in the people shooting them.

I have spent thousands of dollars in each of the last 3 years buying guns from Rock Island.

You would think being a specialized auction house, that they would know everything about the guns they sell. Sometimes they miss certain things and if you’ve done your homework, you can find good deals.

I have bought a lot of guns from these guys. Very good, honest, helpful, and I am not afraid to buy from them.

I have bought military firearms, modern firearms, and some historical. Their magazines/catalogs are beautiful and watching the auction on the internet is fun and they auction fast.

A topnotch organization.

I also have bought a number of hard to find firearms from them. They are professional , get the shipments and billing fast and accurate. If your FFL is on file they ship in 48 hours most times. They also deal in class III transferable. Last Saturday they auctioned a real DSK 12.7mm , two MP40s German WWII FAs with valid tax stamps, a Lewis MG, a MG42 and a RPG7 with the NFA DD permit with a live but disables rocket in it. They are one of only two others I know of that do class III transferable items to the general public. Every one of those items auctioned for more than $35,000, my 25,000 bid for the MG42 was not near enough.

I am going to make you feel very sad. Back in the early 1980’s I had a class dealers license. I bought the following dealer samples: MG-34 in mint cond. $450, MP-40 $225, 1918A2 BAR mint cond. $450, M1A1 Thompson, kind of rough but very shootable $175. Sorry I sold them all now.

The two men were ready for the shootout that was about to take place.

The one guy say's to the man on his left side, you take the guy on the left.

That gentleman responds: Is that my Left, or their left?

Just shoot the guy with the black hat.

Now I find out, your color blind to boot.

Class III dealer samples are a completely diffrent animal than transferable class III Items. Any class III FFL can own and posses samples and most do. For a civilian to own a class III they must be pre86 tranferables that’s where the expense is. Supply demand simple economics. Dealer sample M4s are $2500 or less, same for UZI or FNs. Even with a NFA trust unless in the active biz of firearms sale one cannot posses a post 86 dealer sample. The DSKh was a Vietnam war weapon and the MP40s were pieces of history from WWII that alone creates collector’s value as was the MG42 It also was a real WWII weapon Hitler’s buzzsaw as it is properly known. The end result of NFA86 was to limit anyone who is not an active class III FFL dealer from owning or possessing modern full autos that was the whole purpose of NFA86.

Yes, and, IMHO, unconstitutional as well.
