The National Portrait Gallery reopened with an addition to its famed exhibition of presidential portraits. Joining the likes of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, was Donald Trump, scowling from behind the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office.
Trump looks “pallid and grim” in the photograph, said Paul Staiti, expert on presidential portraits who teaches at Mount Holyoke College.
Trump was impeached twice. His refusal to concede the election of Nov. 3, 2020, led a mob of his supporters to storm and vandalize the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.
The Trump photograph is displayed across the room from a portrait of Rep. John Lewis, positioning Staiti says “invites heated conversation.” In 2017, Lewis said he did not believe Trump was the “legitimate” leader of the nation. When he died, Trump showed little sympathy. “He didn’t come to my inauguration,” he said of Lewis.
“Trump's neighbor to the right is, pointedly, Richard Nixon,” Staiti said. Trump’s critics frequently compared him to Nixon, a Republican who resigned from office amid the Watergate scandal.
Trump's photograph hangs on a freestanding partition, the opposite side of which belongs to Kehinde Wiley’s portrait of Barack Obama, whom Trump succeeded in the Oval Office, having disparaged his record relentlessly during the 2016 presidential campaign. Trump promulgated the discredited conspiracy theory that Obama was a Muslim born outside the United States.
Kelly, the Smithsonian spokesman, said ljuxtaposition of Lewis and Trump was not intentional. Still, some are bound to see symbolism in a president whose opponents said he excused or even gave license to white supremacy facing a civil rights legend on one side and the nation’s first Black president on the other.
Aa with the Trump presidency, the portrait is bound to attract controversy. “I deliberately averted my eyes,” one visitor over the weekend told the Guardian.

Photo portrait of former President Donald Trump at the National Portrait Gallery.
if yahoo doesn’t like it, i do.
What exactly does it mean to be, “an expert in Presidential Portraits”
Is there a course one can take to earn a degree?
Who is Paul Staiti and why should we pay attention to him?
So everyone else gets a painted portrait, Trump gets a photograph...
Why am I not surprised?
Don’t get me started on all the outright lies in the article...republicans stormed the white hut huh?
And, let's face it, ANYTHING beats Obama's portrait:
Trump will get a a painted portrait:
“I imagine the upcoming official portrait painting, however, will likely be grandiose. Trump will have lots of control; it will be his vision of himself. I am expecting something large, flattering and shiny,” Staiti told Yahoo News.
And like Churchill, he WILL be back!
Why did Obama want a sperm on the side of his head?
To be fair, the painted presidential portraits are privately commissioned, usually by supporters of the individual former President. Then it takes time to hire the artist, arrange the sitting, then paint the portrait.
I suspect that Mr. Trump wishes to emulate his predecessor, Grover Cleveland and have two non consecutive terms. So getting a portrait done is on his 2028 “to do” list, not 2021.
It will continue to be uphill slogging for conservatives until the MSM propaganda machine is dealt with.
There was a thread about a month ago when this portrait first came out. I said then and I’ll say it again. This is one butt ugly awful looking portrait.
It looks like it captures the president rising up in his chair to cut loose a fart.
This “news report” by Yahoo is sick in it’s absurd leftist hate filled slant. I hope the reporter dissolves in his own bile.
Bath house Barry wanted the semen stains on the side of his face. When he was 12 years old he wrote a poem about mixing his stains with Frank Marshall Davis (his actual father).
