Has to do with file management on windoze. You can "delete" a file so that a simple view of a directory won't show it, but it is still recoverable behind the scenes; the delete removes the first letter of the file name in the indexing tool.

From what or where was the information "recovered"?
Seems it actually was deleted -

They were able to recover deleted data.
Saying files were deleted and later saying the files were able to be recovered doesn’t mean back tracking or incompetence.
The media really fooled you with the way they presented this information. You fell for the bias and the narrative.

People know how to delete data but they don’t necessarily know how to eliminate it. I have recovered deleted data a number of times.

freeper rigelkentaurus: I listened to the Senate hearing this afternoon. What CNN stated is false, surprise surprise. What the auditor said was the data WAS deleted, but that they were able to successfully recovery it fully and that the issue is moot from there audit viewpoint as they now have the data.
Who deleted it and when is still an open question, and that is certainly destruction of evidence and in violation of AZ election law. Doubt it will be pursued, but the reality is completely different than CNN claims.

Actually, digging in a bit more shows that they are more than competent. They analyzed the file table on the storage device and were able to un-delete the needed files.
Files written to a storage device are tracked in a database that the file system uses. File systems on computer devices perform deletes by erasing the first character in a file name listed in the file table on the storage device and replacing it with some type of special character- for instance, an underscore. This indicates to the storage device that future writes to the storage device can be placed in the area that those underscored file-names indicate- allowing overwriting of the previous data. If the previous data is never overwritten by new data then the data remains and performing operations to recover it is mostly inconsequential if you know how to do it.
Understanding the underlying storage systems to the degree that makes this possible is not something an amateur company would have the skillset to do.
Someone is working from the inside to screw all this up.
A lot of people on the outside, specifically the clickbait media crowd like GP and others, are working to screw this up with sensational accusations. It is like the server farm raid in Germany story or forged letter from Italy about the election. It was posted over and over and over here on FR. Even some congress types who should know better picked up the story.
In the end it was nothing. It took attention away from things that were real and substantive. The left-wing media is only too glad to cover the Qspiracies because it makes all of us, even those who dismiss it, look stupid. By the time real results are found everyone will lump them in with whatever Alex Jones said and laugh at it.
The alt-right media is its own worst enemy. They are not doing us any favors.
FWIW - this story was very believable and it would not surprise any of us if it were true, but all of us (me included) need to be careful and rely on credible sources before we form an opinion.
That is why they hired them. Do you think that they would have hired them if they were competent? They find what they were told to find. These “audits” will accomplish nothing. Anyone with the sense to get out of the rain, knows fraud was openly committed on a large scale basis. They also know that the election will not be changed. And they know why. This was done merely to pacify the sheep, keep their minds off what is really happening, and to kill time to the 2022 elections.

I think the company is competent. Data is data. Getting the data is the trick.
What will kill this audit is if it turns into a 3 ring circus of leaks, made up BS, and conspiracy theories.
I am certain that the facts will be on our side, but if the “facts” trickle out through alt-right media and half of them prove to be made-up BS trolling for clicks how much impact will the truth have?

Managing to recover the data does not mean it was not deleted to begin with.
I see no evidence it is a fabrication.
