1,600 Layoffs Coming at Northern Illinois Jeep Cherokee Factory

Some 1,600 jobs are being cut at a Jeep Cherokee factory in northern Illinois as automakers continue being plagued by the global shortage of semiconductors.

The U.S. arm of Stellantis, formerly known as Fiat Chrysler, said Friday it was cutting one of the two work shifts at its Belvidere Assembly Plant as of July 26. That could result in the layoffs of 1,641 workers,

....

the factory’s situation “has been further exacerbated by the unprecedented global microchip shortage,” Tinson said.

The Belvidere facility has been idled since late March, with Stellantis repeatedly delaying the reopening that is now not expected until at least later this month.

Numerous other auto plants, including many owned by General Motors and Ford, have shut down in the past few months because of the chip shortage, which was caused by semiconductor makers switching their factories to more profitable consumer-electronics processors when automakers closed last year due to the pandemic.

Very few GOP policies are pro worker. Which party is against H-1B?

The great majority of the world’s microchips are made in Taiwan. Trump encouraged them to build plants in the US and they will be doing so - in Arizona. Hopefully Biden won’t screw it up.

Ok smart @$$ here goes. Republicans could stop being in love with LEGAL immigration for one. They could stop being in love with FREE TRADE and get behind strong import tariffs.

That's just a start. Get it?

Oh i agree on immigration. No issues there. But the demand will always be there for legal and illegal workers as long as the majority of our population remains lazy. the mentality now of our youth to not work unless its $15 an hour is mind boggling.

And free trade/import tariffs? When we all had the opportunity to buy “expensive” US made goods, the American consumer ran to first Japanese, then Chinese and now Vietnamese made goods that are cheaper. We were our own worst enemy. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen someone with a Union tee shirt and big hat with the US flag on it walking out of the mall with a bag full of imported cheap shit...
