The National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) has been the keeper of U.S. wildfire data for decades, tracking both the number of wildfires and acreage burned all the way back to 1926. After making the entire dataset public for decades, now, in a blatant act of cherry picking, NIFC “disappeared” a portion of it, and only show data from 1983. You can see it here.
Fortunately, the Internet never forgets, and the entire dataset is preserved on the Internet Wayback Machine. Data prior to 1983 show U.S. wildfires were far worse 100 years ago, both in frequency and total acreage burned, than they are now, 100 years of modest warming later.
By disappearing all data prior to 1983, which just happens to be the lowest point in the data set for the number of fires, NIFC data now show a positive slope of worsening wildfire aligning with increased global temperature. This truncated data set is perfect for claiming “climate change is making wildfire worse,” but flawed because it lacks the context of the full data set. See figure 1 below for a before-and-after comparison of what the NIFC data look like when you plot it.

More fake science. They are after power.

Tony Heller did a video on this a week or two ago.
I noticed the drop in the numbers beginning in the 1950’s when organized fire fighting crews were created by the Feds.
In the 1980’s the numbers began increasing as new policies of allowing fires to burn uncontrolled were put into effect.
There was only a little easing of fire suppression and fire exclusion in the 70's and 80's. The problem is too little fire, not too much fire. After 20 to 100 years of fire exclusion (depends on the type of forest), it will burn out of control.
And now we are seeing an increase due to tinderbox forests resulting from human intervention in natural processes.
I wrote a pair of very detailed articles on wildfire spanning the tumultuous 2014-2018 seasons while I forayed in the insurance business. At the time they were posted to FB.
I may post them here, as they focus on facts and the century-long (ongoing) effort by government to politicize fire (just another ‘crisis’) and, culminating in this climate change BS. iirc there was a 3rd article focused on the Amazon fires at the time.
Exactly. See my prior comment.
I still remember Smokey the Bear public service advertisements from 1957 warning people that there were so many fires in the US each year that if put together they would cover the entire state of Louisiana!
That is 33,522,000 Million acres!
That amount of acreage has not burned in years!
For 2020, the burn was 10,122,336 acres. Higher than normal but still no where the 1957 total.

As airline pilots, we often gave the first report of fires in remote locations. After retirement, I worked two summers as a wildland radio operator / technician and had close contact with these folks. Great people - highly knowledgeable and professional.
And now, even they have been influenced and corrupted by the swamp. Sad.
Or maybe the want to protect illegal aliens. I recall Ann Coulter writing in one of her books of the extensive fires set by illegal aliens.
