Taiwan Health Official on The Island's Successful COVID-19 Management: ‘Taiwan Knows That Communist China Always Tells Lies’
Epoch Times ^ | 05/15/2021 | Adam Molon

Posted on 05/15/2021 7:16:23 PM PDT by SeekAndFind

Not trusting the propaganda of authoritarian China and restricting travel to and from China early on during the COVID-19 pandemic have been key factors in Taiwan’s successful management of the pandemic, one of Taiwan’s top public health officials told The Epoch Times this week.

In an exclusive interview at Taipei’s iconic Grand Hotel, Dr. Shiing Jer Twu—Chairman of Taiwan’s Development Center for Biotechnology, former Health Minister of Taiwan, and former Director-General of Taiwan’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention—shared insights into how Taiwan has been able to keep deaths due to COVID-19 below a total of 15 since the beginning of the pandemic.

Dr. Twu, who holds a Ph.D. in public health from the University of California, Los Angeles, and degrees in medicine and public health from National Taiwan University, stated that an objective skepticism of authoritarian China and its propaganda has helped democratic Taiwan defend against the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus, which causes the disease COVID-19.

“Taiwan knows that communist China always tells lies,” Dr. Twu said. “When they publish something, even if the World Health Organization says something that is according to mainland China, communist China, we don’t believe it. We just see the truth. [Regarding] if this is true or this is not true, what should we do? We just do it scientifically and not believe what they say.”

Dr. Twu, who was Taiwan’s Minister of Health in 2002 and 2003—during the SARS pandemic that originated in Guangdong, China—stated that the time that Taiwan took to effectively manage the SARS pandemic was “the shortest in the whole world” and that Taiwan’s experience in managing SARS, “became the basis of success against COVID-19 now.”

He cited two slogans, in Mandarin, that he coined during the SARS pandemic as foundational for Taiwan’s COVID-19 management. “We say, first, ‘Quick and expert epidemic prevention.’ The government is very fast, [and has] respected experts. And then, ‘All citizens move to safeguard public health,’” Dr. Twu said. “This means that our average people were activated to protect themselves and protect others. This is scientific. This is democracy. But in democracy, it is very difficult to ask people to cooperate with the government to do everything … But Taiwanese people, almost everyone follows the regulations and government requirements, to put on masks, everything. From kindergarten to very old people.”

Dr. Twu said that decreased travel from authoritarian China to democratic Taiwan, stemming from increased political tension between China and Taiwan following the election of Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen, also unexpectedly contributed to Taiwan’s successful defense against COVID-19 after the virus first appeared in Wuhan, China.

“China doesn’t like Taiwan, so they say that they prohibit Chinese people from going to Taiwan for tourism … because Tsai Ing-wen became the president [of Taiwan], they are not happy. They say, ‘our people cannot go to Taiwan.’ We said, ‘Oh, thank you, fortunately, you don’t come here.’ … And after COVID-19 cases [appeared], we very quickly stopped our people from going to China,” Dr. Twu stated. “Our communications stopped very quickly because of this, so our epidemic is not so serious.”

Dr. Twu said that because China continues to block Taiwan, a democratic nation of 24 million people, from participating in the World Health Organization (WHO), Taiwan has become a particularly self-reliant nation when it comes to public health. “Because we are not a member of the WHO, we always depend on ourselves only, and we know what is communist China. They all tell lies,” Dr. Twu said.

Authoritarian China also continues to block Taiwan from participating in the annual meeting of the World Health Assembly (WHA)—the decision-making body for the World Health Organization. This year’s WHA meeting is scheduled to begin later this month.

Dr. Twu stated that Taiwan should be allowed to join both the WHA and the WHO, and that Taiwan can help the world by sharing its expertise on pandemic management with other countries.

“Before, we tried to mention that if Taiwan cannot go into the WHO or the WHA, the meeting, it’s not good for Taiwanese people. Our right to health was broken. It’s not equal, not good,” Dr. Twu said. “But this year, we changed. Now, if you block Taiwan, you are not blocking Taiwanese health rights, you are blocking the health rights of the whole world. Now, Taiwan is not going in asking for help. Now, Taiwan is going to help other countries. This is what I told our Department of Foreign Affairs. We are not for us only, we are for the whole world.”

‘Taiwan Knows That Communist China Always Tells Lies’
This is why the Dems and Never-Trumper RINO Globalists have such an affinity for the CCP. It’s a trait they have in common. That and an extreme distaste for Constitution Loving American Patriots.

One major difference between China and the U.S. is that the Chinese people know that their government is Communist and that they are being lied to.

The U.S. now has a Communist-style government (masquerading as a Democracy), but most Americans don't have a clue that they are being lied to on a massive scale.

A good number of FReepers fell for the CCP propaganda vids of: welding doors shut, dog catcher nets for runners and people keeling over dead in the streets.

Anything out of China is propaganda.

East Asian countries got burned by the 2003-04 SARS pandemic. They have prior experience with China lying about infectious diseases. Could this have influenced them to enforce travel quarantines earlier than the rest of the world? Does anyone know when Korea, Japan, Taiwan, etc., began travel restrictions?

Big ( for Taiwan standards) outbreak here in Taiwan in the past view days. Two days ago, 29 cases. Yesterday 180.Though I think the big increase isn’t due to a spread, just more people coming in to get tested. The infection was brought in by an airline pilot.

The countries that have been most successful in handling COVID are Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand.

What all of them did was impose external lockdowns closing the borders instead of our failed and expensive internal lockdowns.

The lesson is that if anything like this ever happens again stop the flights and seal the southern border.

I do agree with that lesson.

But, overall, the really key thing the government should do is just ask, “What should we do next time?” I don’t feel like they’ve learned anything. Stopping flights? Closing the southern border? Taking any other steps? I suspect that none of that has occurred to them.

“Next time? Well, we’ll mask up. And tell everyone to hide at home. That ought to be sufficient.”

“Does anyone know when Korea, Japan, Taiwan, etc., began travel restrictions?”

One thing we now understand is the world didn’t get COVID directly from Wuhan. The strains that spread around the planet came from Italy. COVID simmered in China but exploded in Northern Italy.

The places that fell next were those with lots of travel to Italy: New York, London, and European neighbors.

Asia, Australia, and New Zealand closed their borders about the same time we did, but were far enough from the Italian epicenter that it saved them.

Agreed. We were lucky that the first global pandemic in a century was quite mild. It could have been so much worse.

We better study what worked and what didn’t, because most of what we thought about pandemic handling seems to have been wrong.

Italy in turn was a hotpot fed by tens of thousands of Chinese workers systematically imported from the epicenter of the SARA-CoV-2 pandemic.

For the longest time, no restrictions were placed on the comings and goings of these workers between China and Italy. They were all in the business of blatantly exploiting Italy’s scandalously loose “Made in Italy” policy.

In effect, a not-insubstantial patch of Italy was populated by red-hot human COVID-19 vectors. Accordingly, if in fact “the world caught COVID-19” from Italy, and not from China, a dubious assertion if there ever was one, there should be no mystery as to why this might be the case.

Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore and Vietnam (4 countries with previously no or very little coronavirus) getting locked down again. Thank you India and Indians using faked negative tests and chartered flights for this last outbreak.

It spread through Italian cities before they had a clue it was even there and then slammed them all at once. They had no clue it was there, what it was, how it spread, or how dangerous it was because the Chinese Communist Party lied to the world. The CCP claimed it was a minor illness, didn’t spread much, and was totally contained.

The lies China spread cost millions of lives and trillions of dollars. The world should respond appropriately.
