When you consider the crimes of the People’s Republic of China, you probably don’t think of overfishing as one of them. But this might be one of the most devastating and long-lasting international crises to come out of Beijing. There’s plenty of fish in the sea? Not for much longer if the Chinese government keeps having its way.
All told, three billion people rely on fish as their primary source of protein, according to the World Wildlife Fund. Given that this is nearly half of the world’s population, the need to carefully manage the world’s supply of fish is absolutely crucial for global stability. A hungry nation is a desperate nation and desperate nations take desperate measures to feed themselves.
China is, far and away, the world’s biggest offender when it comes to overfishing. This isn’t just a crime of omission -- failing to adequately control its fishermen -- but a crime of commission: China prioritizes subsidies for overfishing above subsidies for conservation. The powerhouse spent a whopping $7.2 billion in 2018 alone on fishing. This represents approximately 21 percent of all fishing subsidies worldwide and came at the expense of a 73 percent drop in beneficial subsidies.
Overfishing isn’t environmental alarmism. It is a demonstrable problem in the world’s food supply that has potentially catastrophic consequences. There is overfishing going on at biologically unsustainable levels, meaning that fish are harvested faster than they can reproduce. Pacific bluefin tuna has seen a massive 97 percent drop in its overall population levels.
The problem isn’t that there won’t be any tuna to eat anymore, though that would certainly be an issue. The problem is the ecological niche the bluefin tuna occupies. This animal is one of the most important predators in the ocean,

And we are going to let them just waltz in and take Kiribati / Tarawa????
F that!
Crater the damn runway and sink any chink ships the try to approach
I vaguely recall reading an article a year or two ago about a fleet of nearly 300 Chinese fishing vessels fishing in the area of an ocean preservation area off the coast of South America. The report stated they were harvesting species listed on a worldwide endangered species list but, are considered a delicacy in China and sell for very high prices in China. No one did a damned thing about it. This was never reported in the MSM. I believe I read about it in a post here on FreeRepublic.
Resident Xiden will address this issue by putting limits on US fishing fleets. I believe this has already happened to some extent. Expect more.
I remember hearing a report about Chinese fishing vessels fishing off the coast of a West African nation. I don’t recall the country.
The Chinese bribed the government officials to allow the Chinese to overfish the area off the country’s coast. The fish was frozen in the ships cargo hold.
When the local fishermen complained about the lack of fish, the government told the fishermen there were no fish because of “Climate change!”
Ecuador. It was reported, but nothing was done. What’s Ecuador going to do to China, anyway?
The CCP respects power, and nothing else. As we are learning the hard way ourselves.
I love how the planet let’s the Chicoms do whatever they want.
100 million sharks (for their fins) annually...but the CLIMATE mob claim China is a manmade gloBULL warming leader!
“We are feeding starving Chinese. Deal.”
The USSR did the same thing with whaling. It’s estimated that they killed off an entire species of whales on their own.

Those were the Deng years, now the CCP respects itself, and nothing else.

Yup, shark fin soup, Catch a shark, cut it’s dorsal fin off and toss it back.
China has no internal pressure to control its more rapacious instincts. That is the nature of the beast when you have what is essentially a political situation where citizens have no rights at all to speak of.
We can wail and gnash our teeth at the environazis we have here in the west, but they do perform a useful function of sorts, as long as they are not left to run amok. Both the consumption and conservation side have to restrain each other. This feedback mechanism simply doesn’t exist in China. It is a brutal dictatorship and has no self-control whatsoever.
China is evil.
China is a plague, it’s what communism is.
RE: China is a plague, it’s what communism is.
It’s a mistake to call China a “communist” country, despite the name.
People in the country are allowed to own businesses and make money for their own profit, ALL UNDER THE SURVEILLANCE OF THE STATE. If the party perceives you as a threat, they take over your business ( see Jack Ma of Alibaba ).
Their government uses capitalism to its advantage. To describe her system, I would call it fascistic.
Sounds right
