Dr. Fauci on Rand Paul: 'I just don't understand what the problem is with him'
The Hill ^ | - 05/13/21 11:50 AM EDT | BY JOSEPH CHOI

President Biden's chief medical adviser Anthony Fauci said Thursday he doesn't "understand what the problem is" with Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) after multiple heated exchanges with the senator during hearings.

Fauci, the nation's leading infectious diseases expert, was asked by host Gayle King on "CBS This Morning" how he felt about speaking with the senator.

"You know, Gayle, I just don't want to get into that tit for tat. I just don't understand what the problem is with him," Fauci said. "Well, I'm just going to do my job and he can do what he wants to do and we'll see what happens."

Paul and Fauci most recently clashed on Tuesday during a hearing on the pandemic response.

The senator alleged that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) sent funding to a lab in Wuhan, China, that artificially "juiced up" a virus originally found in bats.

"Sen. Paul, with all due respect, you are entirely, entirely and completely incorrect," Fauci, who leads the NIH's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), told Paul. "The NIH has not ever, and does not now, fund 'gain of function research' in the Wuhan Institute."

Fauci noted that the NIH had funded a project that took place in the Wuhan lab, but it was not meant for gain of function research into human-made superviruses. The NIH awarded a grant to EcoHealth Alliance, a group that hired the lab to conduct genetic analyses of bat coronaviruses. The Trump administration forced the NIH to terminate the grant last year.

"Let me explain to you why that was done: The SARS-CoV-1 originated in bats in China. It would have been irresponsible of us if we did not investigate the bat viruses and the serology to see who might have been infected," Fauci said.

Paul continued to argue with Fauci, accusing him of supporting the laboratory and cooperating with the Chinese government.

"I do not have any accounting of what the Chinese may have done, and I'm fully in favor of any further investigation of what went on in China," Fauci said. "However, I will repeat again, the NIH and NIAID categorically has not funded gain of function research to be conducted in the Wuhan Institute."

The pair have clashed repeatedly during the coronavirus pandemic, including arguing over the necessity to wear masks in public in March. "Here we go again with the theater," Fauci told the senator during that hearing.

Hey Tony, don't you recognize the guy beside you in this photo?

That's Dr. Peter Daszak, president of the EcoHealth Alliance of New York.

The EcoHealth Alliance received research funding from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), that paid for coronavirus gain-of-function research by the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

Dr. Fauci on Rand Paul: 'I just don't understand what the problem is with him'

Yes, you do. The problem with Rand Paul is that he keeps calling you out on your BS and incompetence.

Fauci sure is being specific about what he HASN’T done with the Wuhan lab. Of course that means that DR. Rand Paul has the problem…

On Dec 19, 2017, the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced that they would resume funding gain-of-function experiments involving influenza, Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus, and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus. A moratorium had been in place since October, 2014. At the time, the NIH had stated that the moratorium “will be effective until a robust and broad deliberative process is completed that results in the adoption of a new US Government gain-of-function research policy”. This process has now concluded. It was spearheaded by the National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity (NSABB) and led to the development of a new framework for assessing funding decisions for research involving pathogens with enhanced pandemic potential. The release of the framework by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), of which NIH is part, signalled the end of the funding pause.

Ban on gain-of-function studies ends, Feb. 2018

The rest of the article is worth reading, but 2 more passages are notable:

“Insofar as policymaking should be democratic, you might think that it should reflect the risk-taking strategies of citizens of a democratic country; things become more thorny when an issue crosses borders—is it OK for one nation to impose risks on citizens of another nation?”, asks Selgelid. He welcomes USA's willingness to take the lead on one of the most important problems facing bioethics, but stresses the importance of global coordination. Smallpox research, which is overseen by WHO, offers a precedent for this. “There should not be a complete ban on gain-of-function research—there are plenty of cases where it is appropriate and sometimes it may even be less dangerous than non-gain-of-function research”, said Selgelid. “But there should be an international review of the most worrisome kind of studies.”

Wolinetz notes that there has never been any question of doing gain-of-function experiments in anything other than the highest level of appropriate containment. “That is where you see the fewest incidents”, she said. Gain-of-function experiments are typically done in biosafety level (BSL) 3+ facilities; overall, such facilities have excellent records and are long-accustomed to handling dangerous material. “It may well be that the HHS committee requires BSL4 [the highest rating] out of an overabundance of caution”, said Wolinetz. “There will certainly be a lot of contingencies when the funding agencies agree to a proposal.” Moreover, in time, other nations are likely to start experimenting with gain-of-function research, some of whom might not be used to the kind of strict precautions that prevail in US laboratories. The USA can set an example. “The NIH is really committed to leadership on this; other countries see our system as a potential model”, Wolinetz told The Lancet Infectious Diseases. “And if we are pursuing this research in an active way, we will be much better positioned to develop protection and countermeasures should something bad happen in another country.”

When it comes to Fauci - a seasoned bureaucrat - it's like I state prior: Potato / potato. He does the DC 2-step like one would expect after being in the same position for 3 decades.

But here's the Cat's Meow (RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE EVALUATION AND OVERSIGHT OF PROPOSED GAIN-OFFUNCTION RESEARCH):

The term “gain-of-function” is generally used to refer to changes resulting in the acquisition of new, or an enhancement of existing, biological phenotypes. This report further defines “gain-offunction research of concern” to describe the subset of studies that have been the subject of recent debate and have raised potential biosafety and biosecurity implications. These are gain-offunction studies with the potential to generate pathogens with pandemic potential in humans by exhibiting high transmissibility and high virulence. See Section 6 for a more rigorous description of GOF research of concern (GOFROC).

Thus Fauxi was NOT lying about GOF if Sen. Paul never asked about GOFROC.

Yeah, that DC 2-step...

This article says Fauci is a liar.

Fauci a liar? Understatement.

Years ago Fauci tried to get the Nobel to the US by claiming it was the US that found the HIV virus and linked it to AIDS.

It turns out they were using the French sample and it was the French scientists who had already done that.

The Nobel was given to the French virologist.

Dr. Fallacy thinks, “maybe if I dismiss this, my exposure in creating/funding a ChiCom bioweapon will go away. I got away with it this far.”

"Maybe Rand is not a fan of mass murderers."

Yes, indeed. Fauci is guilty of crimes against humanity and needs to be tried and executed for what he has done to humanity IMO.
